4th QuarterBook Project #1: Create a Newspaper
DUE DATE: Friday, May 1
EXTRA!!! EXTRA!!! Read all about it!!! For this book project, you will be creating a newspaper that captures your important people, places, and events from your independent reading book and combines our study of important text features and structures. Your paper will contain the following elements:
  1. Masthead: The masthead is the title of the newspaper. You will create a title that reflects the setting of your book or some other plot element.

2. Lead Story

  • Write a3 paragraph lead story that explains an important event or plot of your book. Be sure to include aheadline!
  • This story should be written using a chronological text structure.
  • Include a picture for this article. Be sure to include a caption that describes the picture.

3. Character Interview

Include a 3paragraph article about an important person from your book. Be sure to include a headline!

  • Who is this person? What did they do or accomplish? What interesting things should one know about this character/person? What were the character’s motives? What would the person do differently?
  • This story should be written using the generalization/description text structure.
  • Include a picture of this person in action. Be sure to include a caption that describes the picture.

4. Choice Feature

The purpose of this piece is to PERSUADE. You might choose to persuade readers using one of the following formats:

  • An advice column
  • A letter to the editor
  • A book review

5. Choice Feature

Include a 3 paragraph article of your choice that focuses on an important part of your book. The text structure must be either:

  • Cause and Effect OR
  • Problem and Solution OR
  • Compare and Contrast
  • Include a picture for this article. Be sure to include a caption that describes the picture.

6. Include the following text features in your newspaper:

  • Bulleted list
  • Headings
  • Subheadings
  • Words in bold
  • Words in italics
  • Table of contents

Tips for success

  • Artwork should be your own, original work. Be creative and colorful.
  • There are online programs you can use to create a template. Also, Microsoft Publisher has newspaper templates. Be as creative as you can! Do not feel that you are limited by any online templates!
