Societies Council Committee (SOCCOCOM)

Who are SOCCOCOM?

SOCCOCOM are a committee of six elected representatives taken from the membership of Societies Council, elected in annual in the last Societies Council of the academic year. Societies Council is every full, paid member of every GK Unions society at the Medway campus. SOCCOCOM are held to account for their actions which are officially approved or refutedat a (usually) termly Societies Council meeting. (Usually, 1 Societies Council meeting is held in term 1 and 2 Societies Council meetings are held in term 2 to align with the two sets of term dates) After the new representatives have been elected in, they can then allocate themselves specific representative roles. The six outlined are:

  • Arts and social societies representative
  • Course based societies representative
  • Culture and politics representative
  • Faith societies representative
  • Health, fitness and wellbeing representative
  • Open portfolio representative

Roles and Responsibilities in SOCCOCOM meetings

SOCCOCOM usually meet every other week to discuss issues affecting societies. The committee performs the following functions:-

  1. Assess applications for the development fund

The development fund is a pot of £1,500 which is available to societies who need a cash injection in order to develop their society through purchase of something specific. A maximum of £300 payment can be awarded or a loan of up to the total funds available.

  1. Ratify new applications

If a new society wishes to affiliate or set itself up its’ constitution and aims and objectives must be assessed by SOCCOCOM and ratified by simple majority vote.

  1. Disciplinary actions

In the rare occurrence that there is a complaint or negative issue, SOCCOCOM may recommend the Student Activities Development Co-ordinator to take disciplinary measures towards a society, although the final say in this matter will be had by the Director of Medway.

Roles and Responsibilities outside of meetings

1.Outside of SOCCOCOM meetings you will be required to; answer simple queries from societies, point people in the right directionof academics, externals or to GK Unions staff.

2. Develop and campaign for societies at Medway.

3.Develop or work on specific projects to benefit societies at Medway

Those of SOCCOCOM who have been selected to chair a forum will have one formal meeting per term and may have more formal or informal meetings.

Roles and Responsibilities regarding Society Elections

SOCCOCOM members may also be sent to society elections where the new committees are elected at AGM. Officers are responsible for making sure that the election is fair and democratic.
