Title / Steam and press stockings and tights on boards or formers

Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the dyeing and finishing industry.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of boarding and steaming stockings and tights; prepare a boarding and steaming machine to steam stockings and tights; process stockings and tights on a boarding and steaming machine; and carry out batch end procedures.

Explanatory notes

1Competence must be shown on the type of equipment used in the workplace and over the full range of stockings and tights processed in the workplace.

2Performance of the elements must comply with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

3Definition

Workplace procedures refer to the verbal or documented procedures for performing activities including health and safety, operational, environmental and quality management requirements. They refer to manuals, manufacturer's specification, codes of practice, or policy statements.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of boarding and steaming stockings and tights.

Evidence requirements

1.1Boarding and steaming of stockings and tights is described in terms of the reasons for carrying out the process.

1.2Machine sections and associated equipment are described in terms of their function and operation.

Rangemachine controls and indicators, safety interlocks, emergency cut-offs, steam pressure controls, boards or formers, board conveyor or carrier, steam chamber, filters when these are fitted, stripper section.

Outcome 2

Prepare a boarding and steaming machine to steam stockings and tights.

Evidence requirements

2.1Machine is emptied and cleaned to prevent contamination from the previous batch.

2.2Machine is prepared and operated according to workplace procedures.

Rangeboard or former size selected, boards prepared, steam pressure set, steam chamber and boards pre-heated.

Outcome 3

Process stockings and tights on a boarding and steaming machine.

Evidence requirements

3.1Alignment of stockings and tights is in accordance with workplace procedures.

3.2Faults in stockings and tights are identified.

Rangeknitting faults, dye faults, sizing, moisture content at start, moisture content at end.

3.3Machine operating conditions are maintained according to process requirements.

3.4Stockings and tights are removed from the machine and handled according to workplace procedures.

3.5Records are kept according to workplace procedures.

Outcome 4

Carry out batch end procedures.

Evidence requirements

4.1Machine and work area are cleaned to prevent contamination.

Rangeair filters, boards or formers, surrounding work area.

4.2Machine is maintained and lubricated according to workplace procedures.
