Department of Kinesiology and Health

Academic Program Review Action Plan (Proposed)

Based upon the self-study by the Department of Kinesiology and Health (Review Period FY2005-FY2007), the review and recommendations of the external review team, and the report of the Academic Program Review Committee, and in accordance with the strategic plans of Georgia State University, the College of Education, and the department, this Action Plan proposes to address the following major priorities:

·  Increase the number of full-time faculty to provide adequate resources to academic programs with high student: faculty ratios and reduce the percentage of courses taught by part-time instructors

o  “… high student to faculty ratios … must be addressed (i.e. Sports Administration, Sports Medicine, Exercise Science)” – External Program Review Report

o  “The number of part time instructors needs to be progressively decreased by the addition of full-time faculty.” - Report of the Academic Program Review Committee

·  Increase space allocation and access to the department to provide adequate space and eliminate dual usage of laboratories for research and instruction, to provide adequate office space for faculty, staff, graduate students, and part-time instructors, and to meet continued and anticipated new growth

o  “… the current class and lab space is still not adequate for the current programs and does not allow any growth.” - Report of the Academic Program Review Committee

o  “Addressing the space issue is significant …” – External Program Review Report

o  “Facilitation of a pathway for KH to use the Recreation Center is highly recommended …” – External Program Review Report

·  Exploit growth potential in new and existing academic program areas

o  “The department is positioned to grow in several areas but must decide which will be the most viable and competitive …” - Report of the Academic Program Review Committee

o  “The fact that only graduate degrees are offered in the Sports Administration and Sports Medicine programs appears to be problematic.” – External Program Review Report

o  “Discussions about whether to expand either the Sports Medicine or Sports Administration programs to the undergraduate level and/or to create additional Ph.D. concentrations in HPE and Sports Administration are encouraged.” - Report of the Academic Program Review Committee

Specifically, through the 2012-13 academic year, the Department of Kinesiology proposes to:

·  Replace two existing faculty vacancies in Sports Administration and Sports Medicine

·  Replace any faculty vacancies that occur due to retirement or departure in academic progam areas that have achieved or have the clear potential to achieve national recognition for research excellence.

·  Add six new faculty positions in areas of current and potential national research excellence, which may include: Exercise Science (1 T/TT, 1 clinical), Health and Physical Education (1 T/TT), Sports Administration (1 clinical, 1 T/TT), Sports Medicine (1 clinical funded by GSU Athletics) when new funding for faculty resources become available to the College of Education.

·  Add the following space allocation to meet existing need when resources become available from private or public sources, or from indirect cost recoveries from research grants:

o  2000 sq ft of research space – Biomechanics, Exercise Physiology, Psychology of Physical Activity, Sports Medicine

o  576 sq ft of office space (n = 4) for graduate students and part-time instructors

o  1600 sq ft of instructional space – Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education

·  Add the following space allocation to meet anticipated growth:

o  1008 sq ft of office space (n=6) for new faculty positions

·  Increase access to field, court, gym, and exercise space to meet instructional needs

·  Initiate a BS program in Sports Administration if potential for excellence in comparison to high and very high research activity Carnegie classification institutions is documented.
