General Comments:· All sample points require full 8-oz. (code L1094) plastic bottles.
· Additional testing requirements beyond the scope of the Grid will require additional bottles. All sample bottles should be rinsed with sample and emptied at least three times before filling. Continuous flushing (to overflow) is NOT SATISFACTORY.
· If an insufficient NUMBER of bottles are received for a sample, the lab will first analyze metals, followed by the standard anions and finally the special requests.
· All sample bottles must be properly labeled with complete information as requested on the approved (code S216) water sample label. Improperly labeled bottles can be delayed prior to being logged into the system. / Shipping Concerns:
· Questions concerning the shipment of any samples considered to be hazardous materials should be directed to the GEWT HazMat Shipping Hotline (800-381-0664). The MSDS and any other information about the potential hazards must be included with the samples. / Laboratory Product Code Key

Special Sampling Needs:
The following are required over and above the number of 8 oz plastic bottles noted on the Grid: / * Notes:
1. Measured pH values for very pure water may not reflect true acidity or basicity. Sample grids 15, 16 and 19 will receive pH and alkalinity testing by special request only.
2. Free mineral acidity (FMA, ppm and Ca CO3) will be reported for all samples requesting alkalinity that have a pH < 4.3.
3. The units for reporting Hardness, Ca, and Mg are ppm as Ca CO3.
4. Total hardness will be reported as the sum of Ca, Mg, Ba, and Sr as CaCO3. Ba and Sr will only be reported individually if specifically requested or if their concentration exceeds 5% of the total hardness.
5. All results are reported in ppm with the exception of pH, specific conductance, specific gravity, and mercury. Specific gravity and pH are reported without units, specific conductance is reported as mMHO/cm, and mercury is reported in ppb.
6. Grid 33 is a lab-filtered sample, therefore all metals results are reported as filtered, not total.
7. An aliquot of the product must be supplied with the WS-58 sample.
8. Sample bottle must be preserved as per Special Sampling Needs.
· Ammonia (TKN, Free and Fixed)
or
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
Fill a clean 8 oz plastic bottle about 90% with sample. Using a pH meter or pH paper, add 15% Sulfuric Acid (code L338.0500) until the pH of the sample is maintained below 2. Fill bottle to the top with sample, cap tightly and mix to obtain a homogeneous solution.
· Cyanide or Thiocyanate
Fill a clean 8 oz plastic bottle about 90% with sample. Using a pH meter or pH paper, add 7N Sodium Hydroxide (code L304.0500) until the solution is about pH 12.6. Add a few drops excess NaOH. Fill bottle to the top with sample, cap tightly and mix to obtain a homogeneous solution. NOTE: In the presence of sulfide, cyanide will convert to thiocyanate.
· Sulfite
Add glyoxal (Betz product DM1796 or 5-10% solution from Fisher Scientific) to equal 1% of sample. For example, add 2.5 ml glyoxal in a 250 ml sample. Clearly label preserved sample bottle when sending to the lab. / · Oil & Grease (Hexane Extractable Material)
Fill a 1-quart glass bottle (code L1012) with sample. Seal with an aluminum shielded cap.
· Phenol
To a 1 quart glass bottle (code L1012), add 5 ml of 10% Copper Sulfate. Fill the bottle to about 90% with sample. Using a pH meter or pH paper, add 15% Sulfuric Acid (code L338.0500) until the solution is about pH 4.3. Add a few drops excess Sulfuric Acid. Cap tightly, using only a cap with a polyethylene liner, and mix to obtain a homogeneous solution.
· Total Sulfide
To an 8 oz plastic bottle, add 5 ml of Zinc Acetate Solution (code 609.0120). Fill the bottle to its neck with sample. Cap the bottle tightly.
· Organic Acids, ppb Level
One full 8 oz plastic bottle per sample point is required. These samples must be shipped “next day” to the Lab in a cooler with sufficient ice to keep the samples cold.
