VISION 2017: Creative Community Spaces Grant

PURPOSE: Designed to support public libraries to enhance the appearance and functionality of library spaces, these grants enable public libraries to create new spaces for engagement, collaboration, making, and community connectedness.

GRANTS AWARDED: Grants totalling $253,700 have been awarded to 13 councils under the 2013 Creative Community Spaces Grant as follows:

Burdekin Shire Council / $9,900 / Burdekin History and its Stories
A project to create a new and enlivened local history space at the centre of the library - a striking space where discovery, exploration, questioning and creating people’s stories can occur.
Diamantina Shire Council / $9,900 / Library Furniture Refurbishment
A project to improve the amenity of the Birdsville and Bedourie libraries through the creation of an outdoor seating area, children’s area, and audio alcove to create modern spaces for community learning and engagement.
Fraser Coast Regional Council / $20,000 / Altered Spaces
A project to remodel and revitalise the space in the Hervey Bay library to create an interactive and accessible customer service and e-lounge space and a flexible training area for library patrons.
Gladstone Regional Council / $20,000 / Come to the Café - Calliope Library
A project to provide an outdoor mobile Café Cart space at the Calliope Library to help build a community hub. The area will foster social interaction, boost library attendance numbers, capitalise on availability of wi-fi, and encourage patrons to linger and connect physically and virtually.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council / $25,000 / Gatton Library Discovery Garden
A project to provide a usable outdoor space to conduct a wide variety of library programs in beautiful, scented, and shady surrounds. The project will deliver:
  • a scented and textured garden
  • a wet area for youth programs
  • additional space for meetings
  • new library programming enabling cross-generational activities.

Logan City Council / $25,000 / Upside Down
A project to reconfigure the Logan Hyperdome library to create a multi-generational digital learning space and e-lounge, including a flexible space for community programs and a destination place for small business.
Mackay Regional Council / $24,900 / Maker Spaces Mackay (MSM)
A project for a pop-up maker-space consisting of adjustable tables, sled chairs, and a mobile brain-storming board for collaborative and visual instruction. Supportive programming includes weekly sessions cycling through 6-week themes focussing on science and technology.
Paroo Shire Council / $24,900 / Community Spaces
A project to improve the amenity of Cunnamulla library to create a new learning environment for emerging library programs, including Homework and Learning Assistance Program, the Buddy Reading Program for Seniors and Students, and the Reading Club.
Scenic Rim Regional Council / $20,000 / Beaudesert Library Outdoor Space
A project to construct an informal covered outdoor area overlooking Jubilee Park which is accessible from within the library for use as an activity space, outdoor reading area, group meeting area, and for community events.
Mareeba Shire Council / $8,100 / Kuranda Library MakerSpace
A project for a maker-space consisting of adjustable tables and mobile furniture, and a suite of supportive programs to activate the space.
Toowoomba Regional Council / $17,700 / Our Space
A project to develop a Digital Community Hub at Oakey library to provide space, resources and platform to enable a wide range of digital literacy programs, Indigenous programs, author events, and digitization of local Indigenous stories. The space will provide learning and engagement opportunities. Mobile videoconferencing equipment will be shared with surrounding libraries to provide access to up to 20 lessons per month through the Digital Hub at Toowoomba City Library.
Townsville City Council / $24,300 / Digital preservation and stories
A project to create a space for individuals, community organisations, and local collecting institutions to digitize historical records and materials, learn about the digital preservation of those materials, tell their stories, and share content about North Queensland's history.
Western Downs Regional Council / $24,000 / Making a space to create in
A project to develop a community space to facilitate community content creation in:
  • music production and recording
  • digital production and editing
  • recording of voice including oral histories or song
  • online creation and interaction
  • a mobile creation station.
