Theme
State the theme and area of study of your Enquiry. Why did you choose this theme and what parts of it are most interesting to you? Explain briefly how you intend to begin your enquiry.
- In explaining the overall theme of your Enquiry, you may be specific in using a title such as “Friends and Family”, or you may prefer to describe an area of study e.g. “The Built Environment”.
- Having outlined the general theme you should explain carefully what aspects of this theme interest you – “I will try to show people with a background that reflects their character.” Or, “I particularly like to draw the old industrial buildings near where I live.”
- Explain how you intend to approach the theme. How does the theme inspire personal, creative ideas?
Art and Design: Expressive Enquiry - Research and Development of Ideas
Outline briefly how you researched and developed ideas in your Enquiry. What are the main sources or references that you have used? Explain how you experimented with materials and visual elements in developing ideas. You should refer to specific examples of work from your folio.
The following guidance notes apply to your 80 hour Unit only
- In researching your theme, explain what you drew, photographed or collected images of at different stages of the enquiry. How did these things relate to your theme? What aspect of the theme was most interesting to investigate?
- In developing your theme, explain how you tried out particular visual ideas e.g. in composition, form, colour or tone. In what ways have you experimented with different media? By referring to examples from your folio, explain how sketches, studies or collected materials have helped you to develop your theme in different ways.
- By referring to sheet numbers in your folio, explain which development works were most useful.
Optional Unit
Art and Design: Design Activity: Write your design brief, explaining the possible target audience, design issues and constraints. Explain how you researched and developed ideas for this Option. Please note that you do not need to make a thematic link with the Art and Design: Expressive Enquiry (80 hour Unit); however you must explain your approach to this practical option.
OR
Art and Design: Visual Arts Study: State the title of your written study. Give reasons for your choice of topic. Explain what aspects of your topic link to the Art and Design: Expressive Enquiry (80 hour Unit). How has your practical work been influenced by this written study?
The following guidance notes refer to your 40 hour Unit only
Art and Design: Design Activity:
- Name the area of design within which you will be working (e.g. interior, graphics, textiles, etc…). What are you designing? Who is it for? What are the main design issues (e.g. function, fitness for purpose etc…)? What are the constraints of the Design Brief(e.g. dimensions, colour, etc…)?
- What sort of effect are you aiming to create? Referring to examples from your folio, explain how you investigated the design brief and developed ideas. How has this research and development contributed to your outcome?
Art and Design: Visual Arts Study
- When explaining the subject of your Visual Arts Study, try to say precisely what aspect of the subject you are writing about, e.g. “I have studied the work of Andy Warhol and in particular his portraits of celebrities comparing them with contemporary images of well known people.” Why did you select this part of the subject and not some other?
- In your investigation of the subject, what aspects of background, influence or context have been most interesting? How have you extended or edited this research in the completed study?
- What aspects of the subject have you discussed? What opinions or views have you expressed about your subject?
- In making a link between your Visual Arts Study and your own Expressive Enquiry 80 hour Unit, explain how your interest in the subject has contributed to your practical work. Show how your practical work has benefited from the study, but also point out the aspects of the subject of your Visual Art Study that have not influenced your practical work: how is your work different?
