A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR DEACON WILLIAM CARTER, JR., OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL BAPTIST DEACON’S CONVENTION OF AMERICA, INC., FOR HIS MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOUTH CAROLINA AND THIS NATION, AS HE PRESIDES OVER THE 72ND SESSION OF THE NATIONAL BAPTIST DEACON’S CONVENTION WHICH WILL BE HELD IN THE CITY OF CHARLESTON JULY 16-21, 2006.

Whereas, Deacon William Carter, Jr., a native of Charleston County, is the widower of the late Dorothy Mae Carter and during their forty-nine wonderful years of marriage they were blessed with four children; and

Whereas, he received a degree in electronics from the Technical Center in Atlanta, Georgia, and has completed additional studies at the Citadel; and

Whereas, Deacon Carter is a retired electronics technician with forty years of service with the Sears and Roebuck Companies; and

Whereas, a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, he serves as President of the National Baptist Deacon’s Convention of America, Inc., and its Auxiliaries, President of the Deacons Union of Charleston and Vicinity, and a member of the Executive Board of the Charleston County Baptist Association; and

Whereas, in recognition of his outstanding service to South Carolina and the nation, Deacon Carter has received numerous awards and honors which include the Order of the Palmetto from Governor Mark Sanford; having June 11, 2005, declared William Carter, Jr., Day by City of Charleston Mayor Joseph Riley; and receiving a Certificate of Recognition in 2005 from Boston, Massachusetts Mayor Thomas M. Marinos for his contributions to the City of Boston and its residents; and

Whereas, he is a 33rd Degree Mason, Past Master of Gothic Lodge #212, Past Commander-in-Chief of George Washington Carver Consistory #162, and District Deputy of the lst Masonic District for Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, and Dorchester Counties; and

Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of General Assembly that the 72nd Session of the National Baptist Deacon’s Convention will be held in the City of Charleston July 16-21, 2006, with Deacon William Carter, Jr., presiding over this glorious affair; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to recognize and honor Deacon Carter’s outstanding contributions to our State and this Nation on this occasion. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Deacon William Carter, Jr., of Charleston County, President of the National Baptist Deacon’s Convention of America, Inc., for his many contributions to South Carolina and this Nation, as he presides over the 72nd Session of the National Baptist Deacon’s Convention which will be held in the City of Charleston July 16-21, 2006.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Deacon William Carter, Jr.
