Verbal-Visual Essay (compare & contrast)
Value: 10 points on the term
Definition: A verbal-visual essay combines verbals (words, phrases, clauses, quotations) and visuals (sketches, magazines, newspapers, photos, graphics) to express your interpretation of a text. In this case you will be comparing and contrasting your novel and movie. After gathering your information and visuals, follow the steps below.
Your assignment will be created on a half of a bristol board.
On the front:
- Include illustrations, graphics, magazine pictures that express your interpretation and insight on your book and movie(Minimum8). Make sure that the title of the book and movie are clearly visible.
- Include a minimum of twelve verbals among the illustrations.
- Use a minimum of 3 quotes from the book and 3 quotes from the movie to support your views and overall opinion of the two genres.
- Include a minimum 2 personal statements (quotes you create) that further express your views.
- Write a minimum of 2 similarities and differences between the book and movie.
- Your collage should be colourful, creative and visually appealing. The similarities and differences between the movie and the book should be well organized and clearly visible.
On the back:
- Write an explanation of your collage in complete sentences with examples, and have it organized into 4 paragraphs.
- Paragraph 1: explain your quotes, personal statements and images associated with the book you read.
- Paragraph 2: explain your quotes, personal statements and images associated with the movie you viewed.
- Paragraph 3: explain the similarities and differences between the book and movie.
- Paragraph 4: discuss your personal preference: the book or movie and whether you would recommend either to others.
