Frequently Asked Questions

Prefectorial Board FAQs

What kind of person do I have to be to be suited to the PB?

First of all, you will need to be able to commit, as the PB requires a lot of effort and awareness from its members. You will also have to be courageous when doing the more difficult things like booking others. Also, once within the Board, expectations of you will be elevated – both by the school population and by prefects and teachers, so you should be confident of your values and also self-aware. You will also have to be a prefect in school and out of school – you will be, more than other pupils, an ambassador of RGS.

What is the PB workload like?

It is really rather tough. During peak periods, you might have to manage several events at a time. However, throughout your PIT year you will be trained and equipped with skills to properly manage events and duties. The work will come gradually, not all at once.

What kind of work will I have to do in PB?

First, you will have a daily duty as well as monthly rotational duties. You will also be deployed to help out with, or organize, events. On such occasions, you will have to work with other prefects (senior, junior and within your own batch) as a team towards a common goal. Although PB work is most definitely not a one-man-show, it will without a doubt tax you very much at certain periods.

Must I maintain good grades to stay within the Board?

You will have to maintain decent grades and submit reports of your grades each semester. Should you be consistently not doing well in your academic grades, the PB teachers-in-charge and the executive committee will review the situation with you and try to help you.

Do I have to belong to a department?

Yes. Every prefect belongs to a department. However, department work will be split up among its members so as not to place too much strain on anyone.

Can I choose my department in PB?

To an extent. You will be allowed to prioritise possible department choices, and your choices will be taken into consideration when you are assigned a department.

Does being a prefect invalidate me for other leadership roles?

No, it does not. However, prefects are highly discouraged to take on the roles of class chairs or vice class chairs. They are free to take up congress or CCA roles if they are able to manage their many commitments.

More about PB…

What happens if I find out I cannot cope with PB?

If you should feel incapable of coping with PB work and expectations at any point, you could consult the PB teachers-in-charge who would try to help you find a solution. If you feel very strongly about leaving the Board, you will not be forced to remain against your will. However, there would be certain procedures to follow before you officially leave the board.

If I become a PIT, will I definitely also continue on to become a prefect?

No. Near the end of the PIT year, all PITs are appraised and reviewed. Should they be viewed as unsuited for the Board, they may not be confirmed. However, throughout the year, senior prefects and the Board teachers-in-charge will do their best to nurture PITs in the hope that entire batches may be confirmed.

Can I join PSB instead of PB after my PIT year?

Yes, you can, but you must be very sure about your choice and take the proper procedures when withdrawing from PB and applying for PSB. Having said that however, this is highly discouraged as when you join a board in Sec 2, you are expected to already have made an informed decision and committed yourself to the board.

Is the PB really all about discipline?

Of course not! The PB takes on the role of cultivating school culture.. Discipline is but one aspect of PB’s role in the school. Other aspects of PB’s role include fostering school spirit through cheers led by CMU, and many welfare initiatives such as Be Yourself Day. The PB also co-organizes functions like the International Convention for Youth Leaders (ICYL) and the RGS Prefect’s Symposium.

Does PB contribute in one way or another to the LEAPS point system?

Yes it does. However, you do not get any points in your PIT year as you are not officially part of PB yet. You get 3 LEAPS points in Sec 3. In Sec 4, it is the same but you gain more points if you are part of EXCO.

How many PITs will the PB be taking in this year?

Each year the number of PITs the PB takes in is within the 20 to 30 range. However, the exact number depends on how many SLs or JPSL nominees are found suitable.

Who are the PB’s teachers-in-charge?

They are Mr Daniel Lau, Ms Sharon Ong and Mr Thio Cher Kuan. Mrs Prama is not a PB teacher-in-charge; she is the discipline mistress of the school and deals with recalcitrant offenders.

If you have any more questions regarding the PB, feel free to approach any prefect or go to the RGSPB website, . 

Peer Support Board FAQs

Will being in PSB take up a lot of my time?

Being in PSB is a major commitment but there will be ‘peak’ and ‘off-peak’ periods, depending on what events you are being deployed to be part of. In the end, everything depends on how you prioritise and manage your commitments and time.

What will happen if I do not do well in my studies?

The Human Resource committee will ask for updates on every member’s GPA when Progress Reports are given out. If your results are consistently unsatisfactory, the teachers in charge might choose to have a word with you and you might be put on probation, as doing well in your studies is the most fundamental role of being a student. Do note that this information will be kept confidential always.

Am I guaranteed to become a PSL once I become a JPSL?

No, there is no guarantee that your term as a JPSL will guarantee you a spot in PSB the following year. The experience you will get might be an advantage if you do continue as a PSL, but that does not necessarily mean that you have a higher chance of getting into PSB again above the others who have not been JPSLs.

Can I still be in Congress/ a Class Chairperson if I become a JPSL?

Yes, you can.

Can I be both a PIT and a JPSL at the same time?

We know RGS girls can multi-task but this is one thing that is unfortunately not allowed, as both roles are major commitments and others should also get a chance to hone and develop their leadership skills.

Can I join PB instead of becoming a PSL after my JPSL term?

It is generally discouraged, as by the end of your term you should have made an informed decision between PB and PSB. Taking that into consideration, when you state your preference this selection camp, you should be clear about which board you want to join.

How many JPSLs will you take in this year?

About 12 to 14.

Is it possible for a JPSL to be removed from the board?

Yes, it is. There is a Code of Conduct system, which is based on the school’s rules, in which demerit points are given to members who do not abide by the rules. As leaders of the school, much more is expected of you and discipline is not an exception.

APPENDIX B—Scenarios and discussions

Duration: 45 minutes

Venue: Area where participants gather for attendance-taking (CLC?)

Aims

  1. To provide scenarios that PITs/ JPSLs may face, for them to get an idea of the obstacles they may encounter
  2. For the facilitators to gauge the participants’ suitability for PB/PSB based on the thought processes in the discussions

Procedure

  1. A talent scout will be added to the team for the team to be split into two smaller groups, to better facilitate the discussion, and provide participants with more opportunities to share (in a smaller group)
  2. Facilitators will provide the team with scenarios. The participants will have 3 minutes to decide what they would do in the situation and come up with a role play(max. 3 minutes), each of the members taking on roles (friends, PITs, JPSLs) to present the solution they have come up with to the facilitator. *facilitators are to ensure that the members of the group rotate between roles
  3. Facilitator may ask the team questions regarding the solution they have come up with and provide new insights as to how they could solve the problem.
