Procedures

A. If you need time to think/process information during a lecture:

Please signal to me by extending your index fingers and rotating your hands, one over the other, once then tapping your wrist with an index finger.

B. If you have a question: please raise your hand as soon as you do not understand. I won’t get mad, I promise.

C. If you get a wrong answer: Studies show that our brains spark when we make mistakes and nothing occurs when we get the right answer, so please share your spark with the rest of us.

D. If you need the hall pass:

1.  Check to see that the hall pass is available.

2.  Raise your hand using this symbol.

3.  Wait for my affirmative response. I will probably nod “yes.”

4.  When I indicate to you that you may go, clip the hall pass to your clothing.

5.  Return the hall pass to the magnet when you arrive.

E. The flight of the stapler:

I will give the stapler to the first person sitting in row 1.

This pattern continues on until the last person in row 7 places the stapler back on my desk.

F. Edmodo: I will diligently maintain our class website on Edmodo* by posting information such as study guides and other resource materials. *Yes, you can get there from Edlio

Study Guides: A document that details the learning goals, notes, and homework for each section of a chapter as well as providing the date of the exam and homework extra credit for a parent signature; the first assignment of each chapter; an excellent resource if you should be absent.

Homework:

I will be reviewing your homework once each week and giving you feedback on your solutions. Your homework will also be reviewed by your peers and you will receive feedback from them. Therefore, the format for homework is as follows:

1.  On loose leaf binder paper and in pencil, please include your name in the upper right hand corner and write the section followed by page number and problems on the top line. For example: 1.2 p. 34: 5-19 odd

2.  Fold your page vertically so that you have two columns. Please do not draw a line down the center of the page.

3.  Summarize the directions for each problem.

a.  EX: If the directions state: “Graph the function” write “Graph.”

b.  EX: If the problem is a word problem, use bullet points to indicate the relevant information.

4.  Show your solutions steps. If your thought process is not obvious, then it will be difficult to give (detailed) feedback.

5.  After completing each problem check your answer in the back of the book, on Edmodo.com, or with a member of your math family.

a.  Correct answers are to be boxed in a contrasting ink.

b.  If you have an Incorrect answer, check the following common mistakes:

i.  Is your answer an alternate form of the correct answer? For example: your answer is 0.5 and the textbook answer is ½.

ii. Check that you have written down the problem correctly.

iii.  Check your work for mistakes.

iv.  Check Edmodo for discussion about the problem. If there isn’t a conversation already, start one.

v. Once you have tried all of the above, identify the problem by drawing a diagonal line through the problem number with contrasting ink.

6.  Skip a line between problems.

7.  Corrections are to be made in pen to any wrong answer.

Exam days

On exam days, students will have the entire class period to work out their solutions. There will be no postponements of exams. If you are absent on the day of the exam, a makeup exam will be available on the day that you return. The makeup exam will be in the testing center during our class period. Please be aware that it will not be the same form as the test taken by your peers on the exam day, there will be no extra credit problems on the exam, and your exam will be graded on a straight scale. You should not need to be absent on an exam day because of the below-mentioned re take opportunity.

Sharing information during an exam

Any student who gives the teacher the impression that he/she is sharing information, receiving information, or using any type of unauthorized aid, during an exam will calmly hand over any and all requested materials to the teacher. The student’s grade on the assignment will be determined by the teacher within 24 hours of the incident. Do not choose this option. I have every confidence that you and I will be able to work anything out right up until you choose to compromise your integrity during an exam, (see next paragraph).

Re-take Opportunity

You will have one opportunity per quarter to re-take an exam of your choosing.

§  To be eligible to re-take an exam you will need to bring in the signed permission slip by the deadline specified on the permission slip.

§  No re-takes will be taken during the class period that you have math.

§  You will prepare yourself for any re-take using the study guide, your homework packet, and notes. You will check all of your answers and ask any remaining questions before you begin the re-take.

§  You may see your previous exam any day prior to the day of the re-take.

§  Your new score is your score on that test. Caution: if you score lower on the re-take than you did originally, then that is the grade that you will receive on that assessment.

§  You must be enrolled in the class during the re take window to take advantage of this opportunity.

Discipline

In general, you should conduct yourself in my presence as if I am the only teacher who can write the sterling letter of recommendation that grants you admission to the university of your dreams that launches you on a career trajectory in which you earn international accolades such as, but not limited to, a Nobel Prize or Fields Medal.

I have read and understand the above policies.
