Upward Bound

POSITION SUMMARY

The Program Manager reports directly to the Upward Bound Director. The primary function of the Program Manager is twofold: (1) supervise, monitor and assist students and staff with academic related needs and services; and, (2) supervise and administer the residential component of the summer program. The Program Manager working with the Academic Coordinator with program staff, target school administrators, parents and the local community.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND GOALS

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by an individual assigned to this job. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Work collaboratively with the Director and Academic Coordinator to manage and supervise the Residential component of the Summer Program; this requires 24/7 on site living in the residence hall for 6 weeks; supervise and train residential staff during the Summer Program.
  2. Develop, implement and supervise the advisement and workshop sessions for the rising seniors for the Summer Program.
  3. Develop and implement non-academic programming for participants in the Summer Program and supervise RA staff.
  4. Advise, monitor and evaluate the academic progress of participants, grade 12 and college students. Manage all aspects of the college retention program and the college/financial aid processes including supervision of staff, one on one advisement to participants and families, collaborative efforts with the Target Schools.
  5. Plan and implement the annual recruitment and selection of new participants with the Academic Coordinator and Director.
  6. Assist in the recruitment, interview and selection process of RAs and tutors for the summer program and college advisor/tutors for the Academic Year.
  7. Develop and maintain an open public communication with program staff, participants, parents, community members and organizations, Occidental College personnel, Target School personnel and community programs (Gear UP, other TRIO programs).
  8. Assist in the recruitment, interview and selection process of RAs and tutors for the summer program and college advisor/tutors for the Academic Year.
  9. Additional duties as assigned
  10. Some weekends required

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education or Administrative Services highly preferred.

2. Experience working with TRIO programs at Occidental College highly preferred.

3. Three years of experience in educational administrative, counseling or teaching experience working with low-income, first-generation students from diverse cultures and/or languages, preferably in a TRIO program.

4. Two years of experience supervising and implementing college and financial aid applications processes.

5. Two years of experience in supervising, managing and implementing a summer residential academic program for high school students.

6. Professional level of expertise with web based programs, database systems and software programs.

7. Effective oral/written communication skills in English; bilingual skills in Spanish highly preferred.
