GUIDELINES FOR AUTHORS
Two volumes are expected to be published:one by John Benjamins (Amsterdam) and another by Nodus Publikationen (Münster).
1. File Name: When naming your file, please use your surname; if your name is Assunção,the file should be named ASSUNCAO.DOC.
2. Layout: The preferred setting is 12 pt Times New Roman, 1.5 line spacing, on a 13 x 22cm (5” x 8.6”) text area. The only relevant codes are those pertaining to fontenhancements (italics, bold, caps, small caps, etc.), punctuation, and the format of thereferences. Whatever formatting or style conventions employed, please be consistent.
3. Title and Author’s name: When submitting the final manuscript, please add a cover pagewith the full title of the paper, the author’s full name, institutional affiliation, as well as acurrent e-mail address (it needs to be active for at least 18 months).
4. Article: The paper should not exceed 35,000 characters, including references, footnotes, tables, appendices, etc. Plenary papers may be allowed40,000 characters.
5. Abstract and keywords (in English): Provide an abstract in English at the beginning of the article. This abstract should not exceed 500 characters. Abstracts should be maximallyinformative, use the active voice and include the 4 or 5 most important keywords,representative of the findings or implications.
6. Chapters and headings: Articles should be reasonably divided into sections and, ifnecessary, into subsections. Please mark the hierarchy of subheadings as follows:
Heading A = bold italics, two lines space above and one line space below.
Heading B = italics, one line space above and one line space below.
Heading C = italics, one line space above, text on new line.
Numbering should be in Arabic numerals/figures; no italics; no dot after the last number,except for A headings.
7. Text quotations: Text quotations in the main text should be done between doublequotation marks (“ ”). Quotations longer than 3 lines should have a blank line above andbelow and a left indent, without quotation marks, and with the appropriate reference to thesource (size 10 pts).
8. Examples: Examples should be numbered with Arabic figures in parentheses: (1), (2)…
9. Footnotes: Footnotes should be kept to a minimum. They should never be used to supplyfull references: these are to be placed in the References section. Note indicators in the textshould appear at the end of sentences and follow punctuation marks.
10. Special characters: If you cannot avoid the use of a special character or symbol, youmust provide the respective True Type or Open Type font as attachment. Please useUnicode fonts.
11. References: It is essential that the references are formatted according to thespecifications given in these guidelines as this cannot be (re)formatted automaticallyafterwards. Please pay special attention to examples given, taking note of the use ofcapitals, italics and punctuation. Be consistent and include all the references in the text.
11.1 References in the text
Hymes (1955, 1956) has argued that... study of Basque and Caucasian (Tovar et al. 1961:112-114)… …(Kaartinen & Mustanoja 1958; cf. also Ohlander 1941: 23-24)…When a historical person is mentioned in the text for the first time, the first name(s) anddates of birth and death should always be given, such as, for example, “Amadeu Torres(1924-2012)…”.
11.2 References section
- References should be listed first alphabetically and then chronologically (size 10 pts).
- Authors’ names should be given as the authors themselves do, i.e., full first name(s)and/or initials.
- For the first author, first names and/or initials follow the surname (after a comma). Incase of an edited volume, add ‘ed.’ or ‘eds.’.
- Year of publication: Please double check references in press, in preparation, orforthcoming and update when they are published.
- Journal titles should be given in full. The issue number can be omitted when the pagenumbering is consecutive throughout the volume.
- Book publisher: Please omit additions such as Publishing Company, Ltd., Inc. etc. Forstates in the USA, please use standard abbreviations such as Calif., Mass. (and not postalcodes such as CA, MA).

12. Appendixes: Appendixes should follow the References section. Please make sure yourefer to the appendix in the main text.
13. Tables, Figures and Plates:
- Tables and figures should be numbered consecutively and provided with concisecaptions (max. 240 characters).
- All figures and tables should be referenced in the text, e.g. (see Figure 5). Please do notuse unclear indicators such as “see the table below”, or “in this table:…”.
- The book will be printed in black & white. Before submitting the material for production, please check carefully whether all illustrations are still meaningful whenprinted in black & white.
- All tables, plates, and figures eventually have to fit the following text area, either portraitor landscape: 12 cm x 20 cm (4.72 x 7.87 inch) with minimum font size of 8pt.
