Systems of Equations and Inequalities

In order to receive a C for this Unit you must complete the first four items and then select at least one item in each of the following categories.

_____Watch the videos that are posted in the Chapter 3 folder on the class webpage and take notes on each video. (6 points)

_____Answer the four questions posted on the blog for our class and respond to at least one other student on each blog questions. (8 points)

_____Earn a badge on the khan academy website for solving systems of equations by substitution. (10 points)

_____Earn a badge on the khan academy website for solving systems of equations by elimination. (10 points)

_____Vocabulary: system of equations, consistent, inconsistent, independent, dependent, substitution method, elimination method, system of inequalities. (8 points)

  1. Create a set of flash cards that define each of the vocabulary terms for this unit. The front of the card should have the term; the back should include an illustration of the term and a definition written in your own words.
  2. Write a vocabulary test for the terms that are used in this unit. Include illustrations and an answer key.
  3. Create a display for the classroom that defines each of the given terms in your own words.

_____solving systems of equations by graphing (10 points)

  1. Work with a partner to write three original systems of equations, one that is consistent and independent, one that is consistent and dependent, and another that is consistent. (Both partners need to turn in the work to receive credit). Graph your systems, provide the solution, and label them accordingly.
  2. Complete the self-check quiz for 3-1 and e-mail your results to
  3. Page 113 13-18, 25-28

_____solving systems of equations using substitution (6 points)

  1. Page 120 13-18
  2. Write a letter to a student in another school explaining how to solve a system of equations using substitution. Use at least two example problems in order to walk them through the process.

_____solving systems of equations using elimination (6 points)

  1. Page 120 19-24
  2. Grade my “failed quiz”, identify the mistake made on each problem and find the correct intersection for each system.

_____mixed practice (8 points)

  1. Complete Practice Quiz 1 on page 122
  2. Complete the “People Search” page
  3. Use your calculator to solve the 25-27 on page 120, then solve each problem using substitution AND elimination

In order to receive a B for this unit you must complete at least 2 of the following activities worth 5 points each.

_____Practicing all three methods by playing the systems card game in a group of 3 people. Turn in your work for the entire activity.

_____See me in order to select 4 word problems at random and solve each problem using the method of your choice.

_____Work with a partner to create a collection of 6 original word problems (sports usually work well) that can be solved using systems of equations. The original problem should be on the front of each page and the solution should be on the back of each page.

In order to receive an A for this unit you must complete AT LEAST one of the following activities. (10 points each)

_____Create a 10 minute video summarizing the different methods for solving a system of equations and using examples. Discuss the reasons why you would solve using each different method. (You may work in a group of up to three people)

_____Look at the 6 system of equations word problems on page 149 (4-9). Solve each problem using any method you choose. For each problem, explain the method that you chose, how you decided on the method, and the steps involved in solving the system.

_____Write a poem or short story about the different relationships between lines in systems of equations (consistent and independent, consistent and dependent, or inconsistent)

You will earn 2 additional points if this is turned in at the beginning of class on Friday, October 7 along with this page.
