OUTING CLASS TRIP: Olympic Coast Hike, March 19 - 21, 2016

BACKGROUND: We will be backpacking and camping on the rugged and stunningly beautiful northwest coast of the Olympic Peninsula. From the trailhead at Lake Ozette, we will hike about three miles on relatively flat terrain out to coastal campsites in the Sand Point or Cape Alava areas. Once we establish our campsite(s), we will take hikes along the beach to enjoy the scenery in this primitive coastal area that has been preserved in its wilderness status.

While the terrain is mostly level and makes for easy hiking, good footwear is important, as is care on the driftwood logs and headlands along the coast. We may well experience some coastal storms, and each person should bring adequate raingear and make sure that they have arranged to camp in a waterproof tent (or one that has an extra tarp over it). Be sure to bring a back that can carry all your gear, including water, clothing, food, toiletries, eating utensils, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, tarp, and the 10 essentials listed below. Be sure to pack clothing and other gear inside plastic bags, as few backpacks are truly waterproof. [Note: we have some gear – packs, tents, sleeping bags and pads, stoves, etc. – which can be loaned out.]
