One comment I did hear DG Juliet make was that ‘the Rotary Club of Glen Waverley is a model Club for the District’. When I was preparing my responses to the long list of agenda items for the pre-meeting with Club officers it was easy to demonstrate the virtues of this strong and active Club. There is always room for improvement and change however, and bringing new members into the Club is one of the best ways to keep our great Club thriving. In recent weeks we have had a few prospective members show an interest in the Club which is very pleasing. As history shows most new members come from the personal contacts of our Club members.

Inviting a friend or neighbour to our Membership Night next Monday will help to continue our reputation as a ‘model’ Club.

“DEAR FELLOW ROTARIANS AND PARTNERS

Considering a major part of my working life has been spent delivering oral reports and seminars, generally without notes, I was too overcome with emotion on Monday night to say the things I would like to say now.

I came from quite humble beginnings, with a father off to war soon after my birth and post war living for a period in Housing Commission emergency huts. I was quite aware of a lot of poverty around me.

With the passage of time, I fortunately managed to rise above these beginnings but never lost the compassion which I had developed for those less fortunate than myself. Also, having lost a son aged only 34 years, my feelings for those who lose their loved ones due to the 4 F’s (famine, fire, flood and food (lack of)) are ultra strong.

A reasonably successful business has enabled me to put my money where my heart is, and for many years, certainly through Lions and then Rotary but also through other Media I have sought to financially and bodily assist wherever possible. I know I am not Robinson Crusoe in this regard and there are many members of the Club far more deserving of PHF than myself.

As the District Governor acknowledged, Glen Waverly Rotary Club is justifiably a model for all other Clubs in our District.

I would like to now thank you, one and all, for your congratulations, kind words and kisses (ladies only) on the night. As Jeff Fenech once said

“I LOVE YOUSE ALL”.

JIM LEISHMAN P.H.F. (a Proud, Happy Fellow)”
