CENTRAL IDEA:Preserving our cultural heritage provides ways of appreciating and taking shared responsibilities as part of society.

Learner Profile

  • Open-minded- Interviewing a peer and investigating something new about a classmate’s culture will require students to be open-minded about differences in cultural heritage and traditions.
  • Communicator- Demonstrating understanding of cultural heritage and communicating it in clear and accessible language to peer learning groups.

Attitudes

  • Appreciation – Why generations before us have shown appreciation towards aspects of cultural heritage (seven pillars) and why appreciation and value continues today.
  • Commitment- Students will demonstrate their commitment to maintaining their cultural heritage as well the cultural heritage of those around them.

LITERACY:
Our language focus during this unit will be Narrative – Script Writing.

  • During writing students will compare stories and scripts, to gain an understanding of the unique features of plays. They will then rewrite traditional tales from cultures around the world in script form…ready to perform!
  • During reading we will focus on reading myths/ legends – in both story and play format. One of the main focuses will be about author’s purpose. Students will also analyse differences and also find commonalities across cultures.

MATHEMATICS

  • Students will develop and practice various statistical and probability skills. Students will use varied methods, both contemporary and modern, to read an interpret data from different graphs and representations. They will also use strategies to determine median and range. Probability experiments will be conducted with different numbers of repetition to compare results.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

This unit is focused on how we can preserve our cultural heritage. We believe our students’ families are very valuable resources for sharing aspects of their cultural heritage. We appreciate all the support, knowledge, and materials that we will be asking you to share throughout the unit. One of the greatest aspects of our learning community is the cultural diversity that we have and we know that this will create fantastic learning opportunities in this unit.
