PROCEDURE

I. INTRODUCTION

Ps: Good morning, Mrs Faryna! We are happy and gay! How are you today?

T: I'm fine, thanks.

Let's revise the material of our previous lesson. What happened to our main character Hot Dog?

P1: Yesterday Hot Dog visited a doctor.

P2: He had a lot of problems.

II. WARMING-UP

T: Who will show us what happened at the doctor's? (Two pupils act out the dialogue.)

HOT DOG AT THE DOCTOR'S

Hot Dog: I'm a nervous wreck, Doc. Cool Cat solves all the big cases.

Doctor: You must rest, Hot Dog.

Hot Dog: Rest? Do I have to stay in bed?

Doctor: No you needn't, but you mustn't go to work. You must take a holiday.

Hot Dog: But I can't do that. I must solve the Carson robbery case.

Doctor: No, it can wait. Take these tablets. But remember: you mustn't smoke, drink alcohol or coffee or eat too much. And most of all you mustn't get excited.

III. MAIN PART

1. WRITING

T: What modal verbs were used in the dialogue? Ps: Must, mustn't, can, can't, needn't. T: Divide the page in your copybooks into 3 columns. Make a chart like this:

must mustn't needn't

______

______

______

T: Write down what advice was given to Hot Dog.

2. SPEAKING

T: On the board there is a poster with some sings. Look at the signs and say what they mean and where we can see them.

Keys:

You mustn't smoke here.

You mustn't take photos.

You mustn't turn right.

You mustn't park here.

You mustn't sound a horn.

Yоu mustn't overtake.

You mustn't drop litter here.

You mustn't drive into the street.

You mustn't ride a bicycle.

You mustn't drive faster than 30 mph.

3. LISTENING

T: You are going to listen to a poem. One modal verb is used in mostly every line. What modal verb is it? Who is the main character of the poem?

(Pupils listen to a cassette recording.)

Must we listen to the radio?

Must we run in the corridor?

Must we eat or fight or shout?

I think I mustn't.

What do you think about?

Ps: A modal verb "must". The main character is a pupil.

T: What is the poem about?

Ps: School rules.

T: Are the rules the same or different for all schools?

(Pupils express their opinions.)

Then the teacher hangs some posters that can help pupils remember the poem. After listening to the poem 2 or 3 times more pupils try to recite it using the posters.

4. CONDUCTING A SURVEY

T: Let's conduct a class survey and find out your attitude to some school rules. Interview your group mates asking questions from this questionnaire (see below). (Every pupil gets a handout.) Put a V for "yes" and a X for "no".

E.g. Must pupils wear a uniform? — Yes, they must. / No, they mustn't.

After asking and answering questions pupils sum up their results. They count how many people are in favour of every rule or against it. If more pupils are in favour, it's fair.

5. WORKING WITH FLASHCARDS

T: Now let's talk about our school rules. Look at a flashcard, read a word, make up a sentence and say it.

Samples offlashcards:

uniform

chewing gum

jeans

radio/mobile phone

letter

sandwich

corridor

E.g. We must wear a uniform in our school.

We mustn't chew chewing gum in the classroom.

IV. SUMMING-UP

T: Our lesson is coming to an end. We have spoken a lot about school rules. You've had a good chance to practise modal verbs.

V. HOME ASSIGNMENT

T: At home make a set of safety rules for any game you like to play in the park, on the playground, at home etc.
