Workshop Descriptions

Workshops are appropriate for all ages (5 and older) unless otherwise indicated. Younger siblings are welcome at Barnyard Bash, but adult supervision at all times is a must.

Note to Horse participants: You must bring a horse to participate in horse riding sessions. You must also bring and wear your own riding helmet and dress appropriately. Cloverbuds (age 5-8) must have an adult to lead horse and help member one-on-one at horse riding workshops.

Horse Riding for Experienced Riders and Beginners (separate time slots)

Basic equitation and pleasure training appropriate for your skill level. Cloverbuds must have an adult to lead their horse and assist them one-on-one.

Horse Showmanship with Kathryn Pinkham (ages 9 and up)

If you are interested in showing your horse this year, knowing your showmanship basics is a must!

Equine Dentistry with Steve Akeley

Learn how to properly care for your horse’s teeth.

Beekeeping Basics and Beeswax Bowls (ages 9 and up)

Learn the basics of beekeeping while being able to use a beekeeper’s equipment. We will end the workshop by making a beeswax bowl.

Tractor Safety with Doug Gammon

Know the dangers of working with and near tractors, and learn how to keep safe around heavy equipment.

Large Animal Veterinarian Care with Paula Benner

Get tips from a large animal vet on keeping your animals the healthiest they can be.

Soils and Composting with Joan Ebbeson (ages 5-8)

Learn about how soil is formed and how you can make your own compost for a healthy garden. Joan will show you how to make very simple mini-compost bins.

Basic First Aid with Shelby Gammon (ages 9 and up)

Be ready in an emergency situation. Review of basic first aid, including wound care, burns and splinting. Introduction to CPR and AED use. Kids younger than 9 can observe with an accompanying adult.

Raising and Showing a Dairy Heifer with Alan-Dee Dairy 4-H Club

Members of Alan-Dee Dairy will teach you about picking out a heifer for show. They will go over feeding, care, and handling in preparation for a fair. Wear sturdy shoes or boots; no sandals around large animals.

Basic Sheep Care with Wendy Reinemann (ages 9 and up)

Learn the basics of sheep care, including how to tell if a sheep is sick, how to trim hooves, drenching and vaccination basics. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Wear sturdy shoes or boots; no sandals around large animals. Bring your questions about raising sheep!

Make a Milk Jug Toss Game with Trina Havey

Recycle milk jugs and newspaper to make a fun game!

Dairy Heifer Clipping Demo with Alan-Dee Dairy 4-H Club

Watch a demonstration of clipping a dairy heifer in preparation for a show. Wear sturdy shoes or boots; no sandals around large animals.

Make a Stall or Garden Sign with Ellie Libby and Friends

Create your own wooden sign to hang in your animal’s stall or one to stake in your garden plot. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on!

Fabric Bracelets with Trina Havey (ages 9 and up)

Learn to make fun, fashionable bracelets by braiding strips of fabric together. Then add a charm or two to jazz it up!

Soap Carving and Carving Tools with Darlene Newcombe (ages 12 and up)

Learn to make your own set of soap carving tools with popsicle sticks and sandpaper. Then use those tools to create a carving from a bar of soap. This is a double session workshop. You must sign up for both sessions to participate.

Nature Walk and Orienteering with David Richmond

Learn how to find your way in the great outdoors using a compass and other indicators. These are things that you can rely on, even if your gps unit stops working! Test out these techniques on a field hike.

Eco Bot Challenge with Cindy Rogers

Build and program a mini robot to clean up a simulated environmental spill! The 2012 National 4-H Science Experiment, 4-H Eco-Bot Challenge explores robots and how technology can be used to preserve and protect the environment.

Compost Critters with Genna Cherichello (ages 5-11)

Come dig your hands into a worm bin, play “compost tag” and explore the fascinating world of decomposers! If people bring compost samples (a jarful), either from their yard or their own worm bin, we will have a Compost Show & Tell! Bring garden gloves if you want, but they are not required.

Horse Hoof Care with Malcolm Orchard (ages 9 and up)

Farrier Malcolm Orchard will teach you how to keep your horse’s hooves healthy and happy.

Activities and Care for Your Dog with Amanda Flagg

Get a brief overview of everyday dog care, including grooming and vet care. Plus, learn some fun activities you can do with your dog! Please do not bring your own dog to Barnyard Bash.

Beaded Cowboy with Trina Havey (ages 9 and up)

Using pipe cleaners and beads, we will form a cute little cowboy and then glue him to the top of a jar for you to enjoy!

Basics of Quilling with Kat Newcombe (ages 12 and up)

Make a quilled card while learning the basics of the art of quilling, also known as paper twirling. This is a double session workshop. You must sign up for both sessions to participate.

Horse Judging with Rita Glaude

Learn what judges are looking for when they award points or make deductions at a 4-H horse show. Participants will have a chance to judge horses and compare the scores they would give to those of a real judge.
