- Planning Your Mystery Story -

Brain Work 1: What type of events do you want your mystery to center around?

Brain Work 2: Think about the setting? Where will it take place? When will it take place? BE DESCRIPTIVE!

Brain Work 3: What events are going to happen in your story? Write down 7 or more events. Write them again in the order that they will happen.

Your Mystery Events:

Now major brain work. You can make your story more interesting if you tell the events in an order that is different from the order that it happened. Read example below:

Events: John got an “F” on his test. John left to go to lunch. John was missing from the cafeteria. The detective interviewed people. The detective decided that Sam was lying.

Story Order: The detective interviewed people. She found out that John was missing from the cafeteria. John left to go to lunch. John got an “F” on his test. The detective decided that Sam was lying. (The story starts with the detective talking about the case so the information about the events is not given in the same order that the events happened. This little trick will make your story very classy.)

The order that the events will be told in the story:

Brain Work 4: Build some character! Decide on at least five characters for your story (you can definitely have more). Chose a name that you think fits the personality. Describe the physical appearance. For example, do not say that the dude is nervous and impatient, tell the readers that the dude checked his watch every five seconds and was tapping his foot. This will require deep thinking.
