ALERTS: When fresh produce becomes ‘short or tight’ the inevitable takes place, quality is fair & pricing rises. You recall the hot weather from three weeks back. This caused immediate havoc with delicate salad greens like Sweet Gem, Wild ArugulaBaby Lacinato Kale; farms had to totally replant acres & acres of rows; even hardy Romaine & Iceberg, vegetables like Broccoli have been affected. In Mexico Sweet Basil is very, very tight due to heavy rains in each of the growing regions. Quality control with these items & more is uppermost. TERMINAL MARKET: Last Friday beautiful BIG MAC PUMPKINS were shipped in; two per large bin. Autumn is here & we will continually announce the varieties of new crop Hard Squashes like from Jacobs Farm organics in coastal Pescadero region, they are harvesting Delicatta, Spaghetti, Butternut + Sugar Pie Pumpkins. From Ladybug Organics Delicatta Squash. Conventional grown, Red Kuri, Blue & Orange Hubbard’s, Buttercup, Carnival, Turban, Gold Nugget, Sweet Dumpling, Yellow, White & Green Acornis abundant. Wee BeeLittle Pumpkins used for ‘soup bowls’ plentiful too. Decorative Hay Bales, Ornamental Indian Corn, Mini Corns, round Strawberry Corn, attractive Gourds & Orange & White mini pumpkins, Green Corn Stalks with tassels. It is a dynamic climate for menu choices & foyer presentations. To compliment Heirloom Tomatoes still coming from Capay Valley Durst Organic FarmsCastaneda in Santa Rosa. Cherry Tomatoes like Black Cherry, Mini Charms have excellent flavor profiles. Dry Farm Early Girl Tomatoes from Coke Farms still making a show. STONE FRUITS, few varietalsstill coming off the trees in the Central Valley, most fruit now is ‘cold storage’ best & the freshest are stone fruits from Idaho state. Fruit is large & the price is too. Best advice move your menus towards Lady Gala Apples, unique Asian Pears, Quince, Wonderful Pomegranates, fresh Bahri or MedjolDates, try imported New Zealand Gold Kiwi, fresh Huckleberries. A new variety of apple called Smitten, regarded, as the ‘Crown Jewel’ is very tasty. Regarding greens & veggies we also suggest using Orange or Purple Cauliflowers, Baby Leeks & Fennel, Broccoli Rabe, Broccolini, Bok-Choy, Savoy Cabbage, Shelling Cranberry & Garbanzo Beans all consistent. Sea Bean supply has been good, other specialty items like Ginger Sushi, green Shiso Leaves, Red Endive& sweet-delicate Coraline Endive. Red Dandelion Greens, Hyro Watercress & tender Hydro Butter is very special to salads. English Cucumbers from Spain are on the market. Brazilin Ginger too. Asparagus volume is light & as a result we see offerings of Peruvian ‘grass. On Monday from Tazi Sabzi Farms a showing of beautiful colored Emerald or Rosa Bianca Eggplants. Yellow Wax Chiles & dark orange Habanero’s are steady. Grey Zucchini & GoldBar Zucchini plentiful. Returning to fruits; exotic bulk-packed Passion Fruit are ready to cut & scoop out to eat. Dragon Fruits plentiful, Longan from Hawaii, Green Papaya’s from Guatemala & Jackfruit from Mexico good supplies; Black Mission Figs still available most fruit is small, yet, flavor is still good.
