CLASS TITLE: GROUNDS WORKER II

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Grounds, performs a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; maintain and repair groundskeeping equipment and tools; maintain, repair, install and recondition irrigation systems including piping, valves, timers, lines and sprinkler heads to assure proper functioning and maximum efficiency.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Grounds Worker II incumbents perform more technical groundskeeping activities including maintenance of equipment and irrigation systems in addition to regular groundskeeping activities. Incumbents in the Grounds Worker I classification perform general gardening and groundskeeping work.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Perform a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening duties in the beautification of assigned grounds and landscaped areas; irrigate and cultivate trees, shrubs and other plants. E

Mow, trim, edge and water lawns, fields and other turf grounds; remove weeds; prepare and fertilize soil; reseed bare grass areas as needed. E

Perform maintenance, repair and adjustments to mechanical and electrical attachments to power grounds equipment; troubleshoot, identify and repair electrical malfunctions of grounds equipment and attachments; sharpen mower blades, lubricate and change oil and filters as needed. E

Install, recondition, maintain and repair irrigation systems including manual and electric controllers and timers and valves, sprinkler heads, piping and pipe fittings; inspect and assess irrigation systems, determining course of action needed. E

Troubleshoot malfunctions of systems in turfed and planted areas; determine appropriate repairs to be performed and repair and replace as needed. E

Spray, prune and trim trees, hedges ad shrubs; remove protruding tree roots. E

Operate a variety of hand and power tools; operate tractor equipment; operate and maintain spraying equipment; drive a service vehicle to and from work sites. E

Rake leaves and remove trash; sweep walkways; perform routine clean up activities following assigned tasks. E

Communicate with District employees and outside vendors to coordinate activities. E

Maintain routine records related to equipment maintenance and repair activities. E

Perform other groundskeeping work including digging trenches, fertilizing and aerating fields, repairing and maintaining back flow valves and storm drains and other activities as assigned. E

Maintain playgrounds and fields; flatten ground around playground equipment and fill in holes with dirt, wood chips or other materials as necessary.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of:

Operation of hand and power tools and equipment use in gardening and groundskeeping.

Methods and materials used in the design, installation, maintenance and repair of automatic irrigation systems including various timing devices, controllers, valves and heads.

Basic gardening and grounds maintenance procedures including mowing, edging, raking and weeding.

Methods, equipment and materials used in gardening and groundskeeping work.

Health and safety regulations.

Ability to:

Perform general gardening and grounds maintenance activities including mowing, edging and weeding.

Use a variety of tools and equipment in gardening and groundskeeping.

Install, maintain and repair irrigation systems to assure proper functioning of irrigation systems for maximum efficiency.

Operate power equipment safely and effectively.

Mow, edge, water, weed, fertilize, rake and cultivate lawns, fields and other landscaped areas.

Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Work cooperatively with others.

Maintain regular attendance.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school and two years experience in maintenance and repair of groundskeeping equipment.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Valid California driver’s license.
