Course Description:

Anatomy and Physiology is a vital part of most healthcare post-secondary education programs. The Essentials of Healthcare is a medical-focused anatomy course addressing the physiology of each body system, along with the investigation of common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases. The prevention of disease and the diagnosis and treatment that might be utilized are addressed, along with medical terminology related to each system. This course provides an opportunity to demonstrate technical skills that enforce the goal of helping students make connections between medical procedures and the pathophysiology of diseases and disorders. The pre-requisite for this course is Introduction to Healthcare.

Career Technical Student Organization – Health Occupation Students of America: provides the opportunity for high school students in selected programs to demonstrate the skills they have developed in their occupational area through contests, leadership activities, and achievements. HOSA also works to demonstrate to businesses the value of graduates from the various programs. I encourage for each student to become a member of our organization. We will have meetings throughout the year. HOSA is a student- run organization. We assist students to taking part in community service and also reinforcing employability skills.

Analyze the anatomy, physiology and basic pathophysiology of the integumentary system, and evaluate and monitor body temperature.

3.1 Analyze the basic structures and functions of the integumentary system.

3.2 Identify and explain medical terms related to the integumentary system, and utilize appropriately when documenting in a simulated electronic medical record.

3.3 Research common diseases, disorders and emerging diseases of the integumentary system including the pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment that might be utilized in each.

3.4 Make observations of the skin to include: color, temperature to touch, scarring, bruising, abrasions, lacerations, or other abnormalities.

3.5 Discuss the role of the integumentary system in homeostasis regarding body temperature.

3.6 Demonstrate measuring and recording of temperature, and identify abnormal results.

Instructional Strategies:

Course material will be presented through lectures, computer lab assignments, group and individual projects, discussions, guided and independent practice, guest speakers, handouts, and individual presentations.

Work Ethics Program

Local business and industrial partners have indicated to us how important a strong work ethic is to the success of their employees and their businesses. In response to this, the Golden Isles Career Academy includes work ethics as a grading category. Included in this category are the following components: attendance, preparation for class, participation, and cooperation/teamwork. The work ethics category comprises 20% of a student’s grade. Each Career Academy teacher explains to students how they can be successful in this area and in all other course requirements.

Classroom Expectations

1.  Enter the classroom in an orderly fashion. Be in your seat, with all your materials ready to work when the tardy bell ring

2.  this includes putting purses and book bags on the floor and getting out pens, papers, books, etc. DO NOT ROLL AROUND THE CLASS/LAB IN THE CHAIRS!!!

3.  Keep only materials for our class on your desk. Do not work on other course work during our class time.

2. No food, gum or drinks in the classroom except for bottled water

3. Cell phones and electronic equipment should not be visibly displayed or used without permission in the class

4. No grooming in class

5. At the end of the class period, do not pack up your belongings and stand near the door waiting to leave. Your teacher will dismiss the class.

6. RESPECT is one of the most important characteristics of a successful person. You will respect your peers, yourself, visitors, and the instructor and you can expect the same in return.

Classroom Policies

1. Each student is required to keep a notebook for this class. The notebook should be at least a two inch three-ring binder. You should have your notebook in class daily. You should put a title and date on everything in your notebook. Also, all papers should be attached neatly in your notebook. Keep all work in the notebook until the end of the semester. Notebooks will be checked regularly.

2. Students who report to class without required materials (books, pencils, pens, handouts, etc.) will have points deducted from their work ethic for that day. Please bring notebook, pens, markers, and index cards to class daily.

3. All work must be done in black or blue ink. Work done in other colors will not be graded.

4. When you are absent, it is your responsibility to see me for the makeup assignments. You should see me before class or after class for all makeup work. If you do not make up the assignment, you will receive a zero.

5. All assignments must be completed and turned in on time. If you need extra help on an assignment, don’t be afraid to ask. You may see me before class or after class for help.

6. You will receive an assigned seat, and you will be expected to sit there.

7. Students are required to wear their ID badges daily.

8. Follow the Dress Code Policy aligned in the Miller County School System Handbook.

9. Students must be attentive at all times (NO heads on desks, etc.)

10. Often we work collaboratively on assignments. Therefore, when we are working on group activities, you are expected to work with the group that you have been assigned. Everyone should contribute positively to the cooperative learning group.

11. Students will not cheat. Cheating is copying or taking another person’s work, using notes, books or electronic devices without permission during a quiz, test or assignment without permission.

User Guidelines and Responsibilities

The use of any computer or computer network is a privilege, not a right, which may be temporarily or permanently revoked at any time for abusive or malicious conduct. Such conduct would include placing unlawful or defamatory information on a system, the use of abusive or offensive language in either public or private files or documents, or acts of sabotage that are likely to result in the loss of work or the network itself. Our goal in providing network services to teachers and students is to promote academic excellence. We believe that access global resources will facilitate the research process and the development of information literacy skills. These guidelines are provided so that you are aware of the responsibilities you are about to undertake.

DISCIPLINARY ACTION WILL BE TAKEN IN ALL CASES OF NETWORK ABUSE. Depending on the severity of the offense, it is possible that referral to a disciplinary panel will be made. It is also likely that criminal charges will be filed against individuals who vandalize computers or networks.

It is important that all users recognize their responsibilities in having access to and using online databases, the Internet, and instructional programs. It is the user's responsibility to abide by the network policies of Glynn County Schools. LAN and WAN resources are shared by everyone. It is imperative that users understand that actions taken by each individual working in a networked environment may affect all subsequent users of the system.

REMEMBER: The fact that a user "can" perform a particular action does not imply that he/she "should" take that action.

6. I will not damage computers or network equipment.

Internet Terms and Conditions

1. The use of Internet resources must be in support of education and research. Use must be consistent with the educational objectives of GCS. Transmission or downloading of any material in violation of U.S. or state regulation is prohibited. This includes—but is not limited to— material that is threatening or obscene, copyrighted, or potentially harmful to GCS.

2. The use of chat rooms is prohibited.

3. Students do not have the right to modify proxy settings on any computer.

4. Printing shall be limited to information that supports only school related assignments.

Students are expected to demonstrate the maturity and responsibility necessary to work in a networked environment. All terms and conditions, as stated in this document, are applicable to GCS students and staff.

Essentials of Healthcare

Mrs. Spann has gone over the syllabus and classroom expectations. I have read the syllabus and understand in order to do well in this class I must attend class regularly and turn in work on time. Make up assignments are my responsibility to obtain from Mrs. Barber and turn in 1 day per absence period allowed without penalty.
