The structure of an essay: expository

I.  introduction:

1.  hook ( a phenomenon or observation of a topic that most people are aware of)

2.  connecting information (background information or examples)

3.  thesis (statement) = theme of the essay = the sum of the main ides of the essay (an author’s argument of a topic that he or she wants readers to know)

II.  body paragraphs:

1.  topic sentence: includes the topic or the main idea of the paragraph

2.  supporting sentences: provide readers with sufficient information to understand the main idea of the paragraph

a)  explanations

b)  details, facts

c)  examples

a)  restate the main idea of the paragraph

III.  conclusion:

1.  restated thesis (summary of the main ideas of the essay)

TS: One of the most hated chores for many people is ironing clothes because it is not a task that can be completed quickly or thoughtlessly.

SS:

Topic Sentence: Another household chore that many people dislike is washing dishes.

Supporting Sentences:

1.  with a dishwasher, reluctantly people still wash dishes by hand

2.  requires elbow grease and patience

3.  needs to be done daily

Concluding Sentence: Regardless of how Cinderella felt about this particular chore, it is obvious that most people do not enjoy doing it.

However, no one would argue that dishes, silverware, and especially pots and pans washed in a dishwasher come out as clean as they do when washed by hand.

Topic Sentence: Though ironing clothes and washing dishes are not the most pleasant household chores, perhaps the most dreaded is cleaning the bathroom.

Supporting Sentences:

Paragraph 2—Another household chore that many people dislike is washing dishes.

Paragraph 3—Though ironing clothes and washing dishes are not the most pleasant household chores, perhaps the most dreaded is cleaning the bathroom.

Conclusion:

1.  restated thesis: Maintaining a house means doing a wide variety of unpleasant chores.

2.  author’s suggestion: take pride in the results of our hard work to get through the unpleasantness of the chores

The process of comprehension is one of making guesses, confirming guesses, correcting guesses, and making more guesses until the end of the activity.
