THE OPPORTUNITY

Girl Scouting is preparing for its 100th Anniversary in 2012 as the preeminent girl-focused organization in the United States. It remains unsurpassed in its ability to create opportunities for the empowerment of girls through the collaboration of girls, families, volunteers, staff, community partners, and funders. Girl Scouts of Greater New York seeks to be best in class among leadership development organizations in the U.S.

The Chief Executive Officer will be charged to expand opportunities for girls in the five Boroughs of New York City to participate in Girl Scouting. While honoring the traditions of Girl Scouting, the CEO will provide dynamic leadership to advance a vibrant and challenging contemporary environment for girl and adult members. These initiatives are designed to be open and appealing to girls of all economic strata and backgrounds. The visionary and strategic leadership of the CEO is essential to fulfill the promise of Girl Scouting, to develop girls with strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.

Reporting to the Council’s Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer will lead the Council in capitalizing on the strengths of its volunteers and staff to meet the needs of over 23,000girls ages five to seventeen and more than 7,500 adult volunteers in the five Boroughs of New York City. The Chief Executive Officer will promote Girl Scout visibility and be an ambassador of Girl Scouting in the Boroughs served by the Council. Key objectives will be to transform a strong Council and staff into a higher-capacity organization, elevation of skills and bench strength, and taking the Council to a new level and era of operation in a digital-savvy environment. This positionwill require occasional evening and weekend meetings and events. There is some limited out-of-council travel for professional conferences, either at the EdithMacyCenter in Westchester, New York or to other cities in the U.S. for numerous leadership and management development learning opportunities.

Key within the CEO’s responsibilities are financialaccountabilityincludingP&L of a $5MM+ annual budget with significant growth required, throughfundraising and development initiatives, including management of senior leadership and overall staff as well as direct participation in field organization events. Property accountability includes the main office in Manhattan, a service center on Staten Island and camp property in the mid-Hudson River Valley. The human assets of the Council includeapproximately 60 regular staff plus seasonal employees, and 7,500+ volunteers. The successful CEO will inspirestaff to work to their fullest potential and leverage the strong volunteer base of the Council. Diversity is a seriously held goal of the Council in all its operations.

CEO QUALIFICATIONS

A minimum of five years’ comparable senior executive level (C-Suite) experience is expected of all candidates for review. In addition, we seek C-Suite competency across a broad range of executive and managerial functions, including financial management, fund development, business development/marketing, planning, board relations, communications, and staff/volunteer relations. Experience with current digital and social media channels of communication to youth and the ability to advance the Council’s marketing and communications strategies are highlydesired competencies. Demonstrated leadership in organizations undergoing rapid transformation is essential, with commitment to a style of leadership that embraces partnerships, is collaborative, and that empowers stakeholders to achieve to their highest potential. This individual will possess a mature experience-based philosophy of management that serves to motivate those involved, to gainthe strong commitment of partners, and generate support from those on the periphery. It is expected that candidates will have a minimum of an earned undergraduate degree, with advanced education and training in fields relating to nonprofit governance highly encouraged. As part of a network of 112 councils nationwide, this Council is one of the largest in a completely urban environment. There is no other place in the United States that offers such world-class partnering opportunities for the advancement of girls with outstanding neighborhood, business, cultural and educational institutions. The incoming CEO will be well served by solid knowledge of New York City’s institutions and will be expected to live within commuting distance of the office in Manhattan.

COMPENSATION/BENEFITS

The Council offers a highly competitive compensation plan commensurate with the qualifications and experience of theindividual selected.
