As the birthplace of the Boys & Girls Clubs movement, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford (BGCH) has been at the forefront of youth development for more than 150 years. The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford is part of a national affiliation of local, autonomous organizations that work to provide safe and nurturing environments for children and teens to learn and grow. To better enrich the lives of children in the greater Hartford region, we offer programs and services in five core areas: character and leadership; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; and sports, fitness and recreation.In addition to these core focus areas, we also have an Early Childhood Learning Program to enrich the lives of youth ages 3-5 years old and a Teen Program exclusively for youth ages 13 to 18 years old.

BGCH has the following club sites in Hartford: Asylum Hill Club, Trinity College Club, Southwest Club, Northwest Club, Bellizzi School, Capital Preparatory Magnet School, West Middle School and CT Juvenile Training School (Middletown).

General Summary:

Directs the club-wide operations of a broad range of programs, (such as Education, Special Education, Social Recreation, Arts & Crafts, and Physical Education), with broad oversight of program activities. Plans, develops, oversees implementation and supervises programs and program staff, and performs related administrative duties.

Key Job Responsibilities:

Program Development and Evaluation:

  • Plans and oversees the administration of club-wide programs and activities that support Boys and Girls Club Movements Youth Development Strategy reflective of 5 core areas.
  • Oversee the provision of day-to-day program activities in accordance with established standards and goals.
  • Implement programs club-wide including but not limited to Image Makes, Digital Connectors, Keystone, Teen Programming, etc.
  • Ensures that members are encouraged to participate in a variety of program areas/activities and receive instruction and constructive feedback to develop skills in program area(s).
  • Oversees provision of guidance services to members to assist them in fulfilling and making appropriate choices in educational, personal, physical, social, emotional, vocational and spiritual needs.
  • Support Parent Advisory Council.
  • Demonstrates leadership to assure conduct, safety and development of members.
  • Ensures that site staff understands and effectively communicate standards of program; that they ensure program areas are safe, well ventilated and well lit; and that club equipment is maintained in good working condition.
  • Plan and coordinate special events.
  • Plan and implement licensed summer camp.
  • Supports Unit Director as directed
  • Ensure the evaluation of Club programs on a continual basis and ensures programs/activities respond to member needs and address their gender and cultural diversity.
  • Maintain Club equipment and supplies – within program budget.
  • Complete all necessary reports as needed (i.e. monthly reports)
  • Recruit, select and manage assigned staff and volunteers, ensuring productive and effective performance. Provide ongoing feedback and regular appraisal; identify and support professional development opportunities.
  • Oversees proper record keeping and reporting including activities and events conducted breakdowns of daily participation figures, notable achievements and any problems/issues.
  • Implements and monitors all grant requirements.
  • Ensures appropriate club climate.
  • Increase visibility of Club programs via posting of daily schedule, announcements of upcoming events and the dissemination of timely information for the development of advertising and promotion through mailings, fliers, media releases and website blog.
  • Work with Collaborative partners to enhance club programming.
  • Ensure accuracy of all data that is inputted into Kids Trac system.

Staff Management:

  • Manage performance of assigned staff in achieving goals, providing technical assistance in program design, development, evaluation, community relations and program operations
  • Ensure productive and effective staff performance, providing guidance, feedback and opportunities for professional development

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Four year degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of five years work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar organization planning and supervising activities based on the developmental needs of young people, or equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability in personnel supervision, facilities management, financial management and the recruitment and retention of key personnel.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to recruit, train, supervise, and motivate staff.
  • Ability to deal effectively with members including discipline problems.
  • Demonstrated ability in working with young people, parents and community leaders.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekend, if needed.
  • Mandatory Public Service License.
  • Mandatory CPR and First Aid Certifications.
  • Ability to travel within region.
