• fin de la scene: discussion entre Jess et Tony

1. What’s Jess’ reaction to her parents opinion? Explain

2. What’s is Tony’s advice? Do you agree with it?

 Jess feels really misunderstood, she’s furious at her parents, she’s disappointed and hurt too, and she believes that they are unfair because she has always behaved herself, contrary to some of her friends or her sister who wear make up, who play truant, etc…

 Tony advises her to go on playing football without telling her parents about it. He advises her to lie. According to him, she should lie to her parents.

To discover the truth, to stick to the rules, rebellious, to trust sb

Text: Joe Meets my Parents (chap 12)

• Comprehension globale: who? Where? When? Atmosphere?  Sum up!

In this scene we are shown Jess’ family is having lunch. During the meal, Joe, the coach, rings at the door. He has come to talk to her parents about football: he wants Jess to play in the team because she’s gifted. Unfortunately, her parents don’t agree especially because the father was deiscriminated against in his youth when he played cricket, and he doesn’t want her to suffer like him. The atmosphere is quite tense as we feel that Joe is not welcome in the house. It’s also quite awkward, as the coach looks shy and ill-at-ease/ uneasy.
