Tobey Maguire

The American actor, Tobey Maguire, was born in 1975 in California into a poor family. His Dad was a builder and his Mum was an office worker. Tobey didn’t like school and left at just 13. He wanted to be a chef, but his Mum loved the film industry and she took him to acting classes.

He hated being poor and in the 1990s, he worked a lot. “My ambition was…to make money,” he says. He had fun too: he went to lots of parties with acting friends like Leonardo DiCaprio. However, he wasn’t in many famous programmes. In 1992, he got a job in a sitcom, but it wasn’t popular and the show ended after five weeks. Then in 1995, he left work on a comedy film, because he felt frustrated with the work.

Then he went to an audition for a serious drama, the 1997 film The Ice Storm, by director Ang Lee. It was set in 1970s and was about two families with lots of problems. With his young face and big blue eyes, Tobey was perfect as an innocent teenager with a difficult life. The film was a flop in cinemas. But some critics liked the film and he soon found similar roles in more popular films like Pleasantville and Cider House Rules. Then in 2002, he got the role of hero, Peter Parker, in the action movie Spider-Man. With its great special effects, the film was a blockbuster and it changed his life – he got $4 million for it, moved into a mansion in Beverley Hills, and did two Spider-Man sequels.

Now, Tobey has a successful personal life, too. He is married to designer Jennifer Meyer, and has two children: Ruby was born in 2006, and Otis in 2009. He goes to some Hollywood parties, but he likes to live a healthy life. He regularly does yoga and is also a vegan: he doesn’t eat any meat, milk or cheese. But he says he sometimes has a piece of chocolate!

He sometimes meets his old friend Leonardo DiCaprio too – they worked in the 2013 film The Great Gatsby together. His character in the film enters a world of large houses, parties and money – it seems the perfect film for Tobey.
