Intervention Strategies to Enhance Social Communication, Self Regulation, and Learning for Individuals Across the Autism Spectrum

Description:

This course is designed for Speech Language Pathologists, other educators, and parents to learn evidence based practices blending developmental, social, and behavioral intervention approaches to enhance social communication and interaction, self regulation and learning for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorders across the age span. It will focus on strategies to support development from pre-verbal through symbolic communication in natural settings. Techniques for embedding instruction in daily routines, and effective progress monitoring that informs instruction will be provided.

Topics will include:

·  Current Research Regarding Etiology and Assessment in ASD

·  Social Communication, Intentionality, Play, Language, Discourse, and Self Regulation

·  Developing symbolic thought and active reasoning

·  Addressing echolalia

·  Developing social pragmatic communication

·  Addressing needs of children preverbal, emerging language and higher functioning communicators

Speaker: Lisa R. Audet, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Assistant Professor, Speech Pathology and Audiology, Kent State University

Dr. Lisa R. Audet has over 25 years experience working in the fields for speech-language pathology and special education. Dr. Audet uses Evidence Based Practices blending developmental, social, and behavioral approaches to address the core features of autism, specifically joint attention, and social interaction and play in natural settings. Dr Audet has conducted numerous research studies with most focused on the development of spontaneous language in children with autism, social skills training, and treatment efficacy. Dr. Audet presents frequently at the state and national levels, and has authored numerous articles and chapters specific to communication, social-emotional, and behavioral functioning of individuals with ASD and other special needs.

Speech Language Pathologists, educators of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Early Access and Early Childhood staff, general and special education teachers, school administrators and parents.
