Levitt Center for Virology Travel Awards
Description: The Levitt Center for Virology Travel Awards are made possible by a generous gift from the Levitt family. They are intended to support graduate students and postdoctoral research fellows for attendance and presentation of virology-related research at national and international meetings.
Amount of Support: The Travel Awards will fund up to $2,000 per meeting for U.S. meetings and up to $2,500 for international meetings. Labs are capped at $5,000 per lab per year (fiscal year starting on July 1). Expenses include travel costs (e.g. air, car, bus), registration, housing, and food (if not included in the meeting costs). Travel awards will be limited to 1 meeting per student per year unless there is a special circumstance (e.g. an annual meeting such as ASV falls twice in the same fiscal year).
Eligibility: The trainee must be an active participant in Levitt Center for Virology activities (i.e. participation in the All-Iowa Virology Symposium plus attendance at and participation in the Virology Journal Club). The trainee must present a poster or oral presentation at the meeting. Preference for funding will be given to those trainees whose abstracts have been accepted for oral presentation. The mentor of the trainee must also participate in Levitt Center activities (i.e. participation in the All-Iowa Virology Symposium plus attendance at, and serving as an evaluator for, the Virology Journal Club).
Expectations after Award is Approved: The trainee is expected to continue to participate in Levitt Center for Virology activities (see above) for the following year and to acknowledge Levitt Center for Virology support in the presentation at the meeting. The trainee is responsible for keeping track of expenses and working with their departmental and Levitt Center for Virology accounting staff (currently Stephanie Cecil for the Levitt Center for Virology) to receive reimbursement. This includes making sure that the departmental accounting staff is aware of the travel award and making sure that the departmental and Levitt Center accouting staff receive copies of the receipts within 2 weeks of travel. Failure to do so may result in no reimbursement.
Application: Fill out the form on the following page and send it to Al Klingelhutz (). A committee will decide on approval.
