Class Meets:Tuesday & Thursday: 11:00a.m.-12:20p.m. in LANG 113

Text book:Linear Algebra and its applications (3rd updated Edition), by David C. Lay.

CourseDescription: 3 hours. Vector spaces over the real number field; applications to systems of linear equations and analytic geometry in En, linear transformations, matrices, determinants and eigenvalues.

Prerequisite: Math 1720

Grading Policy:Your grade for the course will be determined by

  1. MidtermExams:(50%)
  2. Homework:(20%)
  3. Comprehensive Final Exam:(30%)

A 90%-100%, B 80% - 89%, C 70% - 79%, D 60% - 69%, F below 60%

Midterm Exams:Threemidterm exams are scheduled for this semester, but your lowest score of the three midterm exams will be dropped. These exams will be tentatively set on February 17 (Thursday), March 24 (Thursday) and April 28 (Thursday). There is a slight chance that these dates will change. I will decide at least a week in advance of the exact dates.

Makeupexams will be given only in extremeemergency situations (as decided by the instructor). If a testis missed, the student MUST contact me within 24 hours of the scheduled test time. E-mail is the quickest way to reach me.

Homework:The Homework problems are assigned in class every Thursday. The due is the following Thursday(Unless I say otherwise). Your two lowest homework grades will be dropped.

Even though not the entire assignment will be graded, you should do all of the assigned problems since only by sufficient practice can you master the material. You should expect to spend about two hours on work for the course outside class for each class hour. That makes eight (6) hours per week!

Homework must be written neatly and legibly. In order to ensure proper feedback, leave plenty of blank space for comments. You should begin each problem at the left margin (in other words, no multiple columns), and multiple pages must be stapled together. (Homework which is messy or difficult to read will not be graded!)

Comprehensive Final Exam: Your final exam is Tuesday, May 10, 10:30a.m.-12:30p.m.

Expectations:A fair amount of work is involved in leaning linear algebra. You are expected t o come to lecture on time. Plan ahead so you are not late. You should come to every lecture, and come prepared. If you could not come to class, and missed the assignment, it is your responsibility to find out what the assignment is. Homework assignments and other important information will also be posted on the web at Whenever you miss a class, check this page to find out about assignments that you missed.

You are expected to read the assigned sections and work on the homework problems immediately after they are assigned. You should be prepared to ask questions, take notes, and look alive in class.

Extra Credit:Do NOT expect to be able to do some extra work to help your grade either before or after the final exam. There will be NO extra credit other than perhaps an extra problem on an exam.

Drop Policy:

If the student is unable to complete this course, it is his/her responsibility toformally withdraw from the course. The student may do so through the Registrar's Office after obtaining the necessary signatures. Consents for withdrawal may be obtained in the Math Department Office, GAB 435.The last day to drop a class with an automatic ``W" is February 25th. The last day to drop a class with a ``W" or ``WF" is March 29th.WF" is averaged into your GPA as an ``F." If the student does not properly withdraw from the course but stops attending, s/he will receive a performance grade, usually an “F”.

Academic Dishonesty

It is always O.K. to work together on homework and on problems we do in class. However, it is never acceptable to cheat on quizzes and exams. Anyone caught cheating will receive an F for thecourse. Furthermore, a letter will be sent to the appropriate dean. See

Statement regarding disabled students:

It is the responsibility of the student with certified disabilities to provide the instructor with appropriate documentation from the office of the Dean of Students.
