Bibliography of Users of NSIDC SSM/I Data

Introduction

This bibliography was created with the intent to provide information for a passive microwave workshop targeted at determining if NSIDC should continue to produce the full suite of NSIDC products currently being distributed. The purpose of the bibliography was to provide information on how NSIDC data were being used by the community.

The methods used to compile the bibliography results are as follows:

We conducted a limited search and compiled results from 2 different databases. Teresa Mullins, the NSIDC Librarian, ran queries on Engineering Village 2 (which includes Compendex and INSPEC) and Web of Science.

The search terms used were each of the following terms and “sea ice”:

"passive microwave"

"SSMI"

"SSM/I"

"special sensor microwave imager"

"brightness temperature"

The total number of hits returned was 545 citations. Of those 545, 434 were identified as NSIDC users, and 111 were not resulting in 80% of the citations being identified as NSIDC users of passive microwave products.

A couple of important notes:

-  The approach was conservative. If it was not possible to determine that the user was in our database they were not counted.

-  The user list used in the comparison totaled 1488 individuals.

-  All names contained in a reference were compared to the user list. If at least one name appeared in our list, the reference was categorized as a 'yes' for NSIDC user.

-  The ONLY thing this output tells us is that there were passive microwave related references that corresponded with our user lists indicating that the users had ordered passive microwave data from us. It does not confirm that those data were used in the publication that is referenced.
