Aug 24 – This evening 30 Rotarians, wives and guests enjoyed our annual steak/chicken fry. Thanks to Nancy Hildenbrand, Jean Boyer, Pete Keegan, Dan Breidegam and all of those who provided dessert for a wonderful evening.

We got to meet Celso Santin our exchange student from Brazil.

Aug 31 – This evening’s guest’s included DG Roger Whitcomb, PhD, DG Whitcomb’s son Jeff, Asst. DG LeRoy Seip, Fleetwood Pres. Pete Miller, Celso Santin our Exchange Student, and Rotaract representatives from KU Anthony Ferrara and Joey Pecha.

DG Whitcomb presented a President’s Citation to the Club for various projects completed during Nancy’s year as Pres. He also presented a President’s Citation to the Rotaract Club for their highly successful food drive project last year.

Dr. Whitcomb was born and raised in central Pa. and graduated from Gettysburg College. He taught political Science for 32 years retiring from KU. He also taught at Albright College and at Oxford University in England. He has lived and traveled in 109 countries. Dr. Whitcomb joined Rotary in 1980 and was his Club’s Pres. in 1991-92.

He spoke about how Rotary’s Student Exchange program provides a forum for better understanding between nations.

He announced that the District was donating $5,000 to the Red Cross for hurricane Katrina victims and he asked all of us to donate in some way. He asked that we report our donations to Patt so that he can tally the amount of donations from all of the Clubs in the District.

Dr. Whitcomb also spoke about the tremendous amount of Rotary resources that have been raised and provided to humanitarian projects world-wide from the rotary Foundation, which was established in 1917, including $5 billion since WWII, $650 million for Polio Plus. Since there are hundreds of millions of people in the world that suffer from religious and political persecution, famine, poverty, terrorism and war; Rotary is one of the major sources for assistance that helps human beings obtain dignity and sustenance. He challenged us to help undertake a District project to adopt a village specifically in SE Asia where the tsunami caused such widespread devastation.

Dr. Whitcomb spoke about Rotary membership recruitment and retention and how we must become more diversified as an organization. He closed his presentation with a short video showing a Rotaplast team working in Venezuela. The team performed 61 operations that would have cost $375,000 here in the US.
