BYU Independent Study
Teaching Assistant/Tutor Employee Expectations
Name: ______
The following are a list of expectations for Teaching Assistant/Tutor employees to promote a positive and uplifting work environment.
All tutors and teaching assistants are required to complete CRLA Level 1 Tutor Certification during their first two semesters of employment. Office assistants and receptionists may choose to complete it if desired.
Three times per year the BYU IS TA/Tutor Department holds a trimester meeting on a Saturday morning. These meetings are mandatory for all employees. Attendance is a condition of ongoing employment.
Dress Code – BYU Honor Code is enforced, please see the honor code guidelines on BYU’s website. Business casual attire is required in the office and employees should strive to be neat, clean, and well groomed. Jeans, shorts, t-shirts, leggings, flip flops, and hats are not appropriate for work.
Time-off – Time-off should be requested at least two weeks in advance. Approval is dependent upon coverage needs for the requested date and time.
- BYU Independent Study’s operating hours differ from BYU’s academic holidays (e.g. Thanksgiving and Christmas break). In this event, employees are expected to work their normal shift unless otherwise arranged with the scheduling supervisor.
- Sick days – If an employee is too sick to carry out his/her duties then he/she should notify their team lead before their shift begins. When calling in sick to work or requesting time off, you are expected to cover all scheduled appointments or arrange with someone to cover or cancel them. Extended illness may require a doctor’s note.
Paid and unpaid breaks
- You are entitled to the following breaks:
- 4 hour shift-10 minute paid break
- 6 hour shift-30 minute unpaid break
- 8 hour shift-60 minute unpaid break
Proper use of company time
- While at work, serving our students and completing assigned tasks is every employee’s first priority. If immediate responsibilities have been fulfilled, proactive activities and volunteering for projects is ideal. Otherwise homework and personal study are acceptable. Any personal website use should occupy minimal screen space, meet BYU Honor Code standards, and should not distract others in the office.
Punctuality – Employees are expected to be ready to fulfill their responsibilities when their shift begins. Employees should leave work when their shift ends unless an urgent work responsibility requires attention (this will help you stay within 20 hours).
- If an employee has a scheduled class immediately before or after their shift then slight flexibility may be allowed to attend the entirety of class. Please email your Team Lead if this is the case.
*I have read and agree to the expectations above.*
