Job Title: Recovery Coach

Location:Changes UK, Recovery Central, 9 Allcock Street, Birmingham and other Changes UK properties as required

Salary: £17,500-£19,800/annum(depending on experience)

Accountable to: Service Manager, Changes UK

MAIN PURPOSE OF POST

The post holder will be responsible for supporting individuals who are actively seeking recovery from substance misuse and/or offending.

The focus of all interventions for service users will be:

  • To support ex-offenders to achieve and sustain full recovery
  • To support desistance from crime, freedom from dependence and active citizenship
  • To inspire healthier lives and wellbeing
  • To support individuals into relevant education/training, social enterprise and/or paid employment.
  • To provide effective coaching identifying and encouraging areas of strength, skill and opportunity for each mentee.
  • To promote carer and community involvement
  • To use evidenced based interventions based on best practice guidelines
  • To coordinate volunteer peer mentors to provide buddy support to service users within the community.
  • To contribute to the overall performance of the service to ensure that contractual output targets are achieved.
  • To record and input client data and information in order that the service operates within contractual, administrative and financial requirements.

KEY ACTIVITIES

  • To oversee support for service users by peer mentors
  • Develop and maintain excellent working links/partnerships with local prison teams and wrap around services in the community, including abstinence-based supported housing providers & treatment agencies.
  • Working with local communities, employers and recovery communities to help the development and growth of local resources that support abstinence, wellbeing and desistance;
  • Support the development of recovery initiatives for ex-offenders and service users across Solihull and West Midlands collaborating closely with other peer based recovery organisations
  • Participate in ongoing community resource mapping and asset based development with a particular focus on Solihull and West Midlands
  • Provide recovery check up’s to service users and early re-intervention work to ensure recovery is sustained or the harmful consequences of relapse are minimised.
  • Work actively with the individuals’ social networks and recovery capital e.g. preparing families before release, agreeing support responsibilities & supporting improved communication across networks.

GENERAL TERMS OF REFERENCE

In carrying out the above duties the post holder will:

  • Work across various sites across the region as required.
  • Work flexibly within an agreed number of hours of work to maintain the most appropriate level of service provision including late night and weekend support and outreach
  • Seek to improve personal performance, contribution, knowledge and skills.
  • Participate in appraisal, supervision and Learning & Development processes.
  • Keep abreast of developments in services, legislation and practice relevant to the client group.
  • Ensure the implementation of all Changes UK and policies.
  • Contribute to maintaining safe systems of work and a safe environment.
  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.

Special conditions of service

37.5 hours per week. Role may require you to work occasional unsocial hours, on-call and some weekend duties.

Holiday entitlement: 24 days holiday per year plus statutory Bank Holidays.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience / Essential / Desirable
Considerable experience of supporting individuals to initiate and sustain abstinence based recovery /
Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System /
Extensive knowledge of the recovery process and the contributing factors to making long term sustained changes in drug and/or alcohol use, criminal behaviour and social functioning /
Ability to deliver training /
Commitment and ability to assertively link individuals to diverse forms of mutual aid including SMART, 12 Step and faith based groups /
Knowledge, experience and understanding of the principles of recovery coaching and mentorship /
Excellent relationship and communication skills /
An excellent understanding of boundaries and risk /
Experience of working with those affected by substance misuse and/or offending /
Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing /
Competent in the use of IT in Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and database applications /
Experience of managing staff or volunteers /

PTTLS or equivalent qualification /
Coaching or counselling qualification /

Clean driving license and own transport /
