4-H Summer “STEMist” Program

Information Sheet

STEMist: A college student who teaches science workshops at 4-H summer programs and other educational events.

To address the need for scientific literacy and to fulfill the science mission mandate, four former 4-Hmembers with interest, or experience,in teaching and science are sought for this opportunity.

Expectations:

  • 100 hours of teaching/travel (minimum of 70 hours teaching) dedicated to program
  • Attend STEMist workshop trainings (will be arranged based on selected individuals’ schedules)
  • Complete program evaluations as assigned by Oklahoma 4-H Youth Development

Teaching assignments will be based on the STEMist’s experience and skills. We expect the majority of the time to be spent working directly with youth at county events conducted around the state. STEMists may also be scheduled to teach during 4-H Roundup, Parent-Volunteer Conferences, and other State/District 4-H events.

Workshop materials will be provided by the State 4-H office. Workshop kits will include: Drones, Solar Oven, Solar Cars, Rainwater Harvesting, Power of Wind, Hot Air Balloons, DNA Bio-Tech, and others as assigned.

Compensation: STEMists will receive a $1,000 dollar scholarship from the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation at the completion of their summer assignments. The scholarship funding has generously been provided by Enel Green Power North America, INC. A $500 dollar travel stipend will also be provided. The travel stipend will be awarded to each STEMist after 35 hours of teaching have been completed.

Requirements:STEMists must be previous 4-H members who are currently attending college. We will select STEMists with a history in 4-H and will especially be looking for students who have taught 4-H workshops in the past. A driver’s license and willingness to travel is required.

Restrictions:STEMists may hold other jobs and internships as long as they are not trying to collect this scholarship for work conducted for another organization (which includes OCES interns.) This program is limited to Oklahoma. STEMists may be from another state but are expected to teach workshops only as a part of the Oklahoma 4-H program.
