Small Group Activities

The theme for the next two weeks is nursery rhymes. The children will be introduced to a variety of common nursery rhymes and will participate in fun activities related to the rhymes.

In our literacy small groups this week, the morning class will work on solving simple riddles with picture clues. This activity will encourage listening comprehension and following directions. The afternoon class will work on identifying rhyming words with a “Little Jack Horner” plum pie rhyming game. Both classes will also have the opportunity to use flannel board pieces to help retell favorite nursery rhymes like “Jack and Jill,” “Little Boy Blue,” “Hey Diddle, Diddle,” and “Little Miss Muffet.” In our math groups this week, the children will work on shape identification. The morning class will play a game called “Where’s Teddy?” where they will be presented with a pocket chart full of shape cards, one of which has a teddy bear picture hiding behind it. They will need to name a shape and then see if the bear is hiding behind it. Shapes used in the game will be a circle, square, and triangle. The afternoon class will play a “Queen of Hearts” shape game with shapes like circles, ovals, triangles, rectangles, diamonds, hearts, pentagons, and hexagons.

In the art center this week, the children will practice their cutting and coloring skills as they make a plum pie to learn the rhyme “Little Jack Horner.” They will also begin work on a Humpty Dumpty craft to be displayed in the hallway.
