MEDITATIONS ON VIOLENCE: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence by Rory Miller. Published by YMAA Phone:1800-669-8892 Price $18.95 (Check Amazon’s Price)
As a lifetime student of the martial arts with ranks in many systems, and a retired police officer after almost thirty years on the street, I found this fantastic book a pure joy to read. What SGT Miller has discovered and put beautifully into prose, is the dirty little secret many traditional martial arts instructors will not tell you.
Real life violence is nothing like what you learn in most dojos in the world. The sparring we did in our Karate and Jujitsu schools never looked like anything I had to deal with on the street when a subject decided he was not going to be arrested. Yes, I admit that there was a lot of luck involved when I had to deal with violent subjects on the street; however, I also believe you make your own luck as well. The key is to NEVER get complacent on the street and constant awareness.
Even though being in good physical shape has nothing to do with violence, I found that it was helpful when I had to run after criminals and wind up having to fight to subdue and control them. This is an important book that SHOULD be read by every martial artist, every police officer, military people, and anyone interested in the ugly reality of violence.

WARRIOR MINDSET: Mental Toughness Skills for a Nation’s Peacekeepers by Michael J. Asken, Ph.D. , Lt. Col. Dave Grossman with Loren W. Christensen.
Finally, a book that actually tests your warrior skills and shows you how you can improve your performance. This short review cannot do this book justice. This is not a book you can just skim over. It is more like an academic text that should be studied in order to get the most benefit. As someone who actually enjoys taking tests, after taking this test, I personally was not pleased with my performance on this warrior mindset examination. Even though I successfully passed each section, I also found out the areas that I need to improve upon to be a more complete warrior. If you desire to really live as a warrior, this is a book that must be read and studied.
This book covers the entire realm of what it takes to be a warrior. It begins by a screening examination to determine your strong areas and where you need to improve yourself. It moves to the importance of physical conditioning (This is where I scored the maximum), handling the stress of combat, a mental attack plan, developing concentration skills, tactical performance factors, tactical self-talk and mental toughness, the danger of negative thoughts and the importance of having the winning warrior attitude Do not pass up the appendix sections because they have some very valuable instructions on how to use relaxation techniques for warriors.
In conclusion, all serious military and law enforcement officers and trainers should have a copy of this excellent book in their personal library and continually review themselves and their students using this book as a guide.

STREET KARATE: A Complete Course in Self-Defense by John McSweeney: Paladin Press Publisher: 87 pages. Price:
Many times good things come in small packages. Indeed, this small 87 page volume contains a wealth of practical information for anyone interested in self-defense. What makes this book unique is that it has 35 case studies involving a wide variety of attacks and self-defense counters in real life street encounters.
This is not a formal karate text that shows training in a dojo doing traditional basics and kata. In fact, it does not show any formal karate exercises. However, what it does show is the actual techniques used in various street encounters.
This text explains each attack and what counters someone used to defend themselves. Some of the lessons include: Defending against a two-hand grab, defense against a right roundhouse punch, defense against a boxer’s punch, fist threat defenses, defending against a club attack, defense against a headlock, defense against a front lunge, defense against a knife attack, defense against a front kick, defense against a front choke, defense against a front and rear bear hug, and much, much more.
In the final section (Appendix) the author demonstrates his Tiger Moves Exercise System. There are seven moves covered in this section.
In conclusion, this book may be difficult to locate, but it is well worth your time searching for it. Actually, it has become a collector’s item and I am not selling mine.

BLACK BELT KRAV MAGNA BY DARREN LEVINE AND RYAN HOOVER List Price $15.95 Amazon Price: $10.85
First off, I suggest that you read and study the first two books by Darren Levine before reading this text. Many years ago, when I was the defensive tactics officer for my agency, I was sent to the Illinois State Police academy for an intense six day, 8 full hours a day Krav Maga course which was given by Darren Levine, Imi Lichtenfeld (the founder of Krav Maga) and other Krav Maga instructors.
This book is not for beginners. Though the principles are the same, without studying more of the basic techniques and tactics, one could get lost attempting to perform the techniques in this book.
This text covers the following areas: What is Krav Maga, rules of self-defense, handgun defense from the front, side and rear, defenses against carjacking, handgun threats with 3rd party, edge weapon defenses from the front, side and rear, blunt objects vs. edged weapons, blunt objects vs. blunt objects, edged weapon vs. edge weapon and defending against grenades.
In conclusion, if you are an experienced martial artist or police defensive tactics instructor, you will find the techniques and tactics simple to follow in this text. I found this book very interesting and informative.

LONGARM AND THE WYOMING WOMAN (#358) BY Tabor Evans
Publisher Penguin books Price: $5.99 (See Amazon for best price)
Deputy Marshal Custis Long again has a tough assignment but this one is especially challenging because it involves a former Federal deputy Marshal who is a cold blooded killer. In fact, Longarm had worked with Wade Stoneman in the past and hated the man, and there are plenty of reasons to dislike this killer.
As always, there is always a willing woman who falls for Longarm. The other plus factor is that Adeline Hudson also happens to be a good shot with a rifle or handgun to help him out in a gun fight.
This western adventure has all the elements which make reading Longarm westerns so much fun. There are fist fights, and numerous shoot outs and between the action there are bouts of love making.
In conclusion, if you enjoy western novels this Longarm book is for you.
