Kent Young Chef of the Year Awards

HIT School Partnership Project

Outline of the Project

HIT (Hospitality Industry Training Provider) are offering to support up to 4 schools across Hertfordshire to pilot a new work-based programme of training linked to the industry for level 2 learners post-16 from September 2016. Focussing on an industry with many career and training opportunities including apprenticeships, it is envisaged that this programme will be of interest equally to schools looking to enhance an existing offer or to those who wish to introduce a totally new offer.

How it would fit into the school and the curriculum

·  The learners would remain on the role of the school and all qualifications gained would count towards the school’s performance

·  The programme will fit into the 16-19 Study Programme and meet the criteria for post-16 funding. Schools wishing to introduce this at KS4 would be considered.

·  Six hours a week is the recommended model i.e. one day is preferred although half-day sessions will enable the programme to run.

·  It could be delivered over a six month period to fit the Traineeship model or fit a one year 16-19 Study Programme

·  The group can be made up of mixed ability students (from E3 to L2)

The qualifications

·  In one year the students could complete a Level 2 BTEC. This would be a Certificate or a Diploma depending on the time allocated and level of ability of the learners. There are many associated Hospitality and Catering BTECs to choose from e.g. basic qualification could be Kitchen Services or Food Production and Cooking as an alternative.

·  All units studied would count towards an Apprenticeship framework and students would be exempt from these units if they decided to go down this route.

The ideal students

·  Will have an interest in exploring the hospitality and catering industry. They do not have to make a firm decision about entering this sector as many of the skills acquired are transferable.

·  Will have an excellent record of attendance and good behaviour.

·  Prepared to sit an initial assessment (BKSB).

·  Need to be working at E3 or above. Students below this would not cope with the theory component.

·  The ability to pass Level 1 Functional Skills qualifications (English and maths) or higher.

HIT’s offer

·  Provide a tutor/assessor to run the programme for each school.

·  Training for school staff to deliver elements of the programme and upskill their knowledge and skills.

·  Provide contacts with the industry to support work placements, work visits, employer led projects and opportunities to link with apprentices and take part in competitions etc.

·  Work with up to 12 students at a cost of £220 per day – individual schools will be able to negotiate the number of days and the structure of these e.g. alternate weeks is a possibility.

·  Provide replacement tutors in the event of a tutor’s illness or moving to another job.

The school’s commitment

·  A commitment to the programme for the agreed time e.g. a year.

·  A curriculum specialist will need to work with HIT to design the programme and agree timings etc.

·  Monitor and co-ordinate the work placements e.g. travel arrangements for learners.

·  Provide the learners with the correct protective clothing and other specified equipment.

·  Provide access to the appropriate facilities for teaching purposes. A working kitchen would be an essential requirement.

·  Undertake responsibility for the health and safety checks for work experience.

·  Be prepared to share the model and outcomes with other schools and other providers.

Service Level Agreement

·  This would be drawn up and signed by both parties to cover legal requirements, payment etc. and ensure effective review, monitoring, evaluation and quality assurance of the programme.

Next steps

·  If you would like to be considered please email your expression of interest to:

Mary Hurlstone – and provide information on your role, contact details, best times to contact. Please also include likely numbers of students and let us know if you plan to work in collaboration with another school.

·  A planning afternoon is being held on Tuesday 19th April in Stevenage – please confirm that you will be able to attend this. Not available that day? This will not exclude you but preference will be given to those who can be involved in the design as well as the delivery.
