Personal Equipment

  • Suitable cycling attire for level 2 area and prevailing weather conditions.
  • Cycle: size, condition, suitability for L2 terrain.
  • Spares & Tools: Basic requirements catered for with consideration given to L2 terrain.
  • Food and drink: consideration shown for personal energy/hydration requirements

Route planning, mapwork & Navigation

  • Understanding of different maps, scales and their suitability for ATB
  • Ability to plan a suitable L2 route
  • Interpret a given route
  • Interpret ground conditions from map.
  • General use of map during ride
  • Use of map & compass
  • Use of cycle computer
  • Map memory & ability to navigate while riding (avoiding frequent navigation stops)

Personal Riding skills

  • Road riding: Adherence to “The Highway code”
  • Trail etiquette: Consideration for other users and conservation
  • Braking: Safe and correct use of brakes.
  • Gears: Correct use of gear selection.
  • Pedal Kick: Lift front wheel clear of ground.
  • Track Stand: Hold balance for 5-10 seconds
  • Front Wheel lift: Lift front wheel over 15cm high object
  • Hopping: stationary hop with both wheels clear of ground turning or side movement
  • Bunny Hop: 7.5cm high object
  • Drop off: Up to 50cm in height
  • Speed Jump: 7.5cm high object
  • Medium up hill climbing: Short slopes of up to 30o
  • Medium down hill descents: short descents of between 30o & 45o
  • Obstacles: Roots, logs 12- 15cm and “ruts” can be cleared without posing a problem.
  • Cornering: Correct technique through switch back corners.
  • General Impression: overall impression of riding skills

Overall

  • General impression of candidates personal ability to ride L2 terrain (personal fitness, confidence, enthusiasm for ATB, combination of all skills to give flow to ride, etc).

  • Obstacles: Most small obstacles such as roots, logs under 12cm
  • and "ruts" can be cleared without posing much of a problem.
  • Cornering: Inside pedal up, weight on outside foot, knee pointing into corner, wide entrance hitting apex and accelerating on exit
