Job Title:Building Inspector

Purpose of Job

The purpose of this job is to perform skilled inspection work in the enforcement of the municipal building codes and life safety measures of the City of Atlanta. Duties include, but are not limited to: performs inspection services; preparing inspection reports; preparing certificates of occupancy; preparing citations and court briefs; and processing paperwork.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Administrative Duties:

* Prepares daily and weekly reports of inspections.

* Prepares certificates of occupancy.

* Prepares mileage reports for reimbursement.

* Prepares citations and court briefs.

* Prepares written communication to owner and contractors. Monitors work in assigned area.

Communication:

* Answers questions, provides information, and otherwise provides assistance to homeowners, builders, contractors, and others as necessary.

* Confers with supervisors, architects, engineers, inspectors, and others on building codes and inspections.

* Responds to complaints, problems and/or concerns from the public.

* Attends staff meetings to provide/obtain information.

Problem Identification and Solution:

* Inspects new construction with approved plans and specifications to ensure compliance with City building codes and ordinances.

* Inspects building demolition, repair and alterations to ensure compliance with applicable codes and provides approval upon total compliance.

* Inspects old/fire damaged structures subject to condemnation as fire or safety hazards; issues notices of required correction of deficiencies.

* Investigates complaints and alleged violations of fire, zoning and building codes and issues citations for violations when appropriate.

* Under the supervision of Building Inspector, Senior or Building Inspector, Principal, inspects sprinkler system, fire pumps, smoke removal systems and alarm system on high-rise buildings.

* Reviews plans, drawings and electrical diagrams to ensure job is done to specification.

* Inspects new and existing building for license approval.

Marginal Job Functions

Knowledge of Job

Knowledge of building codes and inspection practices, policies and procedures; knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to building construction; ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; ability to use independent judgement and discretion in the handling of emergency situations.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

High school diploma or GED required; four years of experience in the building construction field which includes experience in residential and commercial construction; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid Georgia driver's license. Must be eligible to become a Special Police Officer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of job related machines and office equipment. Must be able to move or carry related objects or materials. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.

FORM/SPATIAL APTITUDE: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape.

COLOR DISCRIMINATION: May require the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color.

INTERPERSONAL TEMPERAMENT: Requires the ability to interact with people (i.e. staff, supervisors, general public and elected officials) beyond giving the receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
