GEORGIA STUDIES 8th GRADE

Georgia Performance Standard(s):

SS8H8: The student will analyze the important events that occurred after World War I and their impact on Georgia.

a. Describe the impact of the boll weevil and drought on Georgia.

b. Explain economic factors that resulted in the Great Depression.

c. Discuss the impact of the political career of Eugene Talmadge.

d. Discuss the effect of the New Deal in terms of the impact of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Agricultural Adjustment Act, rural electrification, and Social Security.

SS8H9: The student will describe the impact of World War II on Georgia’s development economically, socially, and politically.

a. Describe the impact of events leading up to American involvement in World War II; include the Lend-Lease Act and the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

b. Evaluate the importance of Bell Aircraft, military bases, the Savannah and Brunswick shipyards, Richard Russell, and Carl Vinson.

DAILY TEACHING STRATEGIES

MONDAY:
Opening:
1.  What was the CCC?
2.  What kinds of things did they build?
E.Q.: How did the CCC help the state of Georgia?
Work Period: T and S will review a couple of Political Cartoon’s about FDR and the New Deal. S will answer discussion questions based on the author’s point of view and the meaning of the cartoons. S will work in groups of 3 or 2 to describe all four New Deal programs from the standard in their own words. Then, each group will complete the Alphabet soup activity identifying which program would help people in certain hypothetical situations.
Closing: S and T will review the answers to the Alphabet soup activity and collect.
Homework: Study for Quiz on Wednesday on SS8H8 a. – d.
TUESDAY:
Opening:
1.  Who fought in World War II?
2.  What was the war about?
E.Q.: How did World War I lead to WWII? Treaty of Versailles
Work Period: S will view political cartoon on Treaty of Versailles and discuss how this led to WWII. S will read Section 1 of Chapter 23 and complete a timeline on the beginning of WWII. S and T will review the major players and causes of the war.
Closing: Review the EQ Think-Pair-Share
Homework: Study for Quiz tomorrow on SS8H8
WEDNESDAY:
Opening:
1.  Who were the Axis Powers in WWII?
2.  Who were the Allied Powers?
E.Q.: Why didn’t the U.S. get involved in the war at the beginning?
Work Period: S will complete a Multiple Choice Quiz on the Great Depression and New Deal. S will view a political cartoon on U.S. isolationism and answer discussion questions. Brainstorm reasons for entering a war. S will view video on the Bombing of Pearl Harbor.
Closing: Was US involvement in the War justified and Why?

THURSDAY:
1.  What military bases were located in GA during WWII?
2.  How do you think GA contributed to the war effort?
E.Q.: Why are the ports in Savannah and Brunswick important during wartime?
Work Period: S will complete a WWII in Georgia Scavenger Hunt using three data sources and a map of Georgia military bases. S and T will review the winning group and vocabulary from standard.
Closing: Row vs. Row by groups and info from standard
