Successful candidates for positions as RAs will be selected on the basis of their interest in student community and their experience in a residential student environment (or other customer care environment).

Accommodation Services will be looking for awareness, sensitivity, discretion and an ability to work confidently without constant supervision in a variety of situations, some of which may require particular skills and quick thinking.

RAs / Wardens are expected to live on site at either Glasney Student Village or Tuke House and take an active role in the maintenance of welfare and good order at all times, to take particular responsibility for incidents occurring during their "on call" duty periods, to provide a link between the University and its resident students and to help foster a good living environment with special regard to student welfare, discipline and health and safety.

Residential Assistant – Glasney Student Village

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  To assist Accommodation Services as required on key dates throughout the academic year and participate in regular drop in services at Glasney Lodge in order to welcome, support and offer guidance to residents at Glasney Village.

·  To maintain a high profile ensuring residents are aware of the RAs and service including their functions, responsibilities and availability and promote considerate living and lead by example in presenting an acceptable standard of behaviour in line with the residence regulations.

·  To be aware of, and refer residents to, the relevant support services, policies and procedures and provide effective and timely liaison between residents and Accommodation Services staff.

·  To help organise social events and encourage integration between residents, and to have input at events such as arrivals and departure weekends, open days and House Hunting sessions.

·  To assist in the resolution of complaints and problems within the residences as directed and to write incidents reports and logs, providing accurate information regarding specific incidents as necessary.

·  To maintain confidentiality at all times and be aware of data protection issues.

·  To assist in ensuring compliance with Health and Safety requirements and monitor and report fire regulation breaches in residences.

·  To, if required, participate in the Falmouth Exeter Plus Performance and Development Review Appraisal Process (PDR.)

·  To attend training workshops and courses identified as appropriate such as first aid, manual handling and fire warden training

·  To work within the Health and Safety at Work Act, and to the Falmouth Exeter Plus Health and Safety Policy. The post-holder has a legal duty to take reasonable care for all health and safety for themselves, their staff and others who may be affected by their actions.

·  To work within the relevant Falmouth Exeter Plus policies and procedures.

·  To undertake other duties not specifically stated above, which from time to time are necessary for the effective performance of the group without altering the nature or level of responsibility involved.

Residential Warden – Henry Scott Tuke House

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  To assist Accommodation Services as required on key dates throughout the academic year and participate in regular drop in services/patrols at Tuke House in order to welcome, support and offer guidance to residents.

·  To maintain a high profile ensuring residents are aware of the RAs and service including their functions, responsibilities and availability and promote considerate living and lead by example in presenting an acceptable standard of behaviour in line with the residence regulations.

·  To assist in the management of a small team of two Residential Assistants (Foundation Student); providing support and direction and ensuring tasks are carried out effectively. Whilst on duty, to provide guidance and support to Residential Assistants.

·  To attend and participate in initial and follow-up training, weekly or fortnightly team meetings, progress meetings and other meetings relevant to the post.

·  To be aware of, and refer residents to, the relevant support services, policies and procedures and provide effective and timely liaison between residents and Accommodation Services staff and out of hours services especially where welfare concerns arise.

·  To help organise social events and encourage integration between residents, and to have input at events such as arrivals and departure weekends, open days and House Hunting sessions.

·  To assist in the resolution of complaints and problems within the residences as directed and to write incidents reports and logs, providing accurate information regarding specific incidents as necessary.

·  To work on call as per the rota, one weekend in four and one weekday evening a week. You will be paid for the amount of time spent on any Resident Assistant activity i.e. if you are called out for an emergency or carrying out a patrol of the residence.

·  To maintain confidentiality at all times and be aware of data protection issues.

·  To assist in ensuring compliance with Health and Safety requirements and monitor and report fire regulation breaches in residences.

·  To, if required, participate in the Falmouth Exeter Plus Performance and Development Review Appraisal Process (PDR.)

Applicants will be invited to attend for an interview will participate in an ‘In-Tray’ exercise and communication task Accommodation Services staff, followed by limited questions from the panel of Accommodation Officers.

Terms and Conditions

1.  RAs / Wardens must be full-time, registered and attending students of Falmouth University or Exeter University and will usually - a) Be studying in their second year or later b) Have resided in Halls for at least one academic session.

2.  RA’s must have no outstanding rent or fees owing to Falmouth Exeter Plus.

3.  Standard RA appointments are for 42 consecutive weeks for Glasney Student Village and 42 weeks & 2 days for Tuke House:

Glasney Student Village: Saturday 6th September 2014 until Saturday 27th June 2015.

Tuke House: Thursday 4th September 2014 until Saturday 27th June 2015.

4.  All RA appointments are subject to a probationary period of three months and employment by Falmouth Exeter Plus is subject to the satisfactory completion of this period. During the probationary period, the performance of RAs will be closely monitored and any RA failing to perform the duties as described in the job description or by action or inaction injuring the formation of good community in the halls of residence may have their employment terminated or have the probationary period extended.

5.  RAs may terminate their employment at any time with one month’s written notice.

6.  RAs may re-apply for further period(s) of employment – normally up to a maximum of three consecutive periods - and, if successful, will be issued with a new contract in line with the Terms and Conditions then in force.

7.  RAs can be appointed to any Hall of Residence and can be required to relocate to another Hall at any time after reasonable consultation. RAs must reside on the site to which they are appointed.

8.  RAs must be accessible to residents when, as part of a roster with other RAs on the same site, they are “on call”. RAs must be available on site for the periods of “on call” duty.

9.  In addition to their rota, RAs are required to work on the Arrivals weekend of 13th and 14th September 2014 at Glasney Student Village and 6th and 7th September at Tuke House. Resident Departure day of 27th June 2015. In addition duty rotas, RAs are also required to assist up to four days per year with University Open Day tours of accommodation normally on a Saturday between 9am and 5pm.

10.  Leave of absence may be taken, subject to reasonable notice in writing, agreement by the Accommodation Office Manager and suitable cover for the absence being provided by the other RAs on that site.

11.  RAs will be required to sign a Falmouth Exeter Plus Residences Contract for the accommodation provided.

12.  The accommodation is provided solely for occupation by the RA and must be vacated by the last day of the period of appointment as an RA.

13.  It is a requirement that RAs hold a current, recognised and full first-aid qualification and arrangements will be made by Falmouth Exeter Plus for any necessary training or re-training. RAs will not be permitted to take up or remain in post unless they are in receipt of this qualification. RAs have a duty to make themselves aware of all health and safety and emergency procedures, together with all student services available on site.

14.  It is mandatory that RAs attend fully the induction course that is normally held prior to or at the commencement of formal duties.

Induction and Training

All new RAs are obliged as part of the terms and conditions of employment to take part in the full week of induction and training beginning on; Monday 8th September. This will take place at Glasney Lodge and involves a full timetable—over all five days—including: -
