Dairy Project Committee Meeting

Present: Dean Schmelzer, Julie Wendler, Rich Meyer, Larry Meyer, Tiffanee Tesmer, Scott and Pam Pralle, Shelly Kleiman, Deb and Joe Ortner, Jeff Pinter, Wayne Artac, Mike, Kim and Bryann Lewien
Meeting called to order at 7:40 by Scott Pralle.
Minutes read from last meeting. Motion to approve as read made by Rich Meyer, seconded by Jeff Pinter. Motion carried.
Dairy Judging
- Start practices at the end of April
- Area Animal Science Day is June 29 in PolkCounty
- 7 practices, no classroom session – all live judging practices
- Need 5 or 6 out of 7 to compete – will be posted in the newsletter
- Not sure what is best for everyone when it comes time to scheduling practices – coach’s will do their best
- May join with another county if not enough for full team from ClarkCounty
- Dairy Project Committee would like to host AASD in the future.
State Fair Dairy Selection Process
- Deb Ortner, Pam Selz-Pralle, and ValWood (not present) gave subcommittee report
- Representing dairy project is a reward and the committee feels ClarkCounty should send quality animals
- High emphasis on 4-H activities, less emphasis on FFA and Junior Hohlstein events
- Discussion on proposed plan (see attached plan)
- Motion to implement as proposed made by Jeff Pinter, seconded by Pam Selz-Pralle; debate on proposal – concerns with not enough to represent the county and now going to make it even harder
- 2009 quality better than before – very successful
- One year trial suggested – plan to re-evaluate on annual basis
- Plan needs additional wording regarding these points just allow the member to qualify to try out for State Fair
- After discussion vote to approve motion – passed.
- State Fair request – will need at least one, maybe 2 extra chaperones – request extra beds and stalls (5)
Kick Off Meeting
- Deferred to Junior Leaders and call older members to plan
Showmanship Age Breakdown
- Move to reconsider the motion to have each grade judged separately at the Clark County Fair– Dean Schmelzermoved/Joe Ortner 2nd; 2/3 vote 10 in favor, 0 opposed. Passed.
- Discussion on Showmanship: Grades will show as follows: 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th & up.
- The top blue from each class will move to the Supreme Showmanship Contest; with the exception of 11 & up – two will move on from that class. Any class with more than ten exhibitors will have the top two exhibitors move to three (11 & up would be three).
- Motion made to have Supreme to show on Sunday made by Larry Meyer, seconded by Pam Selz-Pralle. Discussion held. Dean Schmelzer called question to end the discussion. Motion passed.
- Reminder to all exhibitors (& post in the barns) – exhibitors must show their own animal in showmanship and if they qualify for Supreme Showmanship the same animal in Supreme as they qualified with. Exceptions may be made in extreme cases, at discretion of dairy committee.
Scavenger Hunt
- Suggested by Deb Ortner (Dale Erickson organized in the past)
- Youth to plan during a youth dairy meeting
Any Other Business
- State Fair selection day: Friday, June 18th at Ortners; show at noon. Julie Wendler judge; cattle should be ready in show condition
Motion to adjourn made by Larry Meyer, seconded by Dean Schmelzer. Motion passed. Meeting adjourned at 9:35 p.m.
