Shoalhaven District PSSA President’s Report 2013

I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to all members of the Shoalhaven District PSSA including executive, conveners, sports organisers and teachers for the time and effort they have committed to sports programs and the students in our district. Your efforts, passion and expertise have ensured the smooth running of carnivals, trials and the “Dragon Tag” gala day, giving many students the opportunity to participate and excel in sport.

A particular mention must be made to LeAnn Hanson and her efforts with cricket this year, by guiding the South Coast Girls Cricket team to a state title. Congratulations LeAnn. Another outstanding achievement was that of Jade Mustapic, from Berry PS, who was selected in the NSW PSSA track and field team after finishing 3rd in the 800m event at the NSW State Carnival. Jade also received a Sporting Blue Award. Well done Jade. Another student who represented the district proud was Karlee Symonds of North Nowra PS, who also received a Sporting Blue Award for her achievements in representing NSW for Cross Country and Athletics for AWD students. Well done Karlee.

Congratulations to Sarah Kelly for her organisation and management of the NSW PSSA Girls Cricket State Carnival, which was held in Nowra. This was her first effort at hosting a carnival and she did herself and the Shoalhaven District very proud.

2013 has been a busy and successful year for the Shoalhaven District PSSA. It has been a couple of years of transition through the executive and many thanks must go to the following people:

Bob Mortyn – for your wisdom, expertise and late night phone calls. The Shoalhaven District PSSA would have been lost without you this year.

To the executive: Sarah Kelly, who most of you know, puts in a huge amount of work to ensure we’re all informed on what is going on and Amber Penington, who has done a great job with treasury.

Thank you to the teachers who have helped with the running of the major school carnivals:

Swimming- Michael Barby and Callala PS

Athletics –Jim Hines and Bomaderry PS

Cross Country – Dion Lalor and Falls Creek

I would also take this opportunity to thank the following teachers who convened trials and managed teams throughout our district in 2013:

Basketball- Ian Mobberley and Deb Sansom

Cricket- LeAnn Hanson and Tony McCann

Tennis – Julie Burgess

Soccer- Ian Mobberley and Michael Barby

Netball- Sarah Kelly

Touch Football – Dean Haddon and Bruce Farquhar

AFL – Rick O’Shea

Rugby League – Tracey Wellington and Shannon Evans

Hockey – Peter Wright-Smith and Stacey Bond

Rugby – Scott Jones

It must be noted that our district is the only district in the Southern Illawarra Zone that does not hold some sort of Gala Day. This is something, that I believe, needs to be addressed early next year.

I hope that 2014 sees our association continue to enjoy the support of schools and teachers in promoting and fostering the sporting endeavours of the students in our district.

Shannon Evans

Shoalhaven District PSSA President.
