I. A. Differences between Boys’ and Girls’ Learning Styles

This session will offer guidance to teachers to help both girls and boys to thrive in the classroom. Each gender has different characteristics which affect behavior and attitude. Teachers will learn to recognize learning styles of boys and girls, to develop behavior plans and to work with parents differently based on the child’s gender.

Infant and toddler teachers have an important role as a child’s first teacher, and are in a unique position to make a lasting difference in the lives of these little ones through informed care-giving practices. The relationship between teacher and child enhances development in all domains (physical, social, cognitive, and emotional), which promotes successful learning and mastery of new skills and concepts. This presentation will highlight the components of high quality care for this age group such as responsive care, verbal and cognitive stimulation, and individualized attention to promote stable relationships..”

I. C.Become the Trainer You Want to Be, Part IMANAGEMENT

Teaching children vs. teaching adults requires a completely different set of skills. This training is perfect for the person who has done no training before, but wants to know how to do it. The next three sessions are part of the same presentation. The first part of Laura’s session lays out techniques to help trainers of adults. Her sessions will include planning, making agendas, using presentation strategies such as Power Point, flip charts, videos, ground rules and keeping everything moving along and fun.

2. A.Health and Safety in the Classroom: Best Practices

From disinfecting to crisis plans, the participants of this session will go through a typical day in the classroom, uncovering the dangers that face both children and adults in our program. Common practices and routines are discussed so that illnesses and accidents are things of the past.

2. B.A Room Full of Helpers: Creative GuidanceSTAFF & MANAGEMENT

Misbehavior in the classroom can be frustrating and draining to even the best of teachers. Creative guidance strategies can help teachers manage difficult moments, and help children learn important socialization skills like empathy, problem solving, self-control, delayed gratification, effective communication, and manners. How can we help children make responsible choices without threats and punishment? How can difficult children learn to contribute? How can children learn to think before acting? Is it possible for children to do the right thing when the teacher isn’t looking? This presentation will answer these questions and many more.

In this session, Laura Varnell continues her presentation on guidelines for becoming a better trainer

who keeps the attendees engaged in the material being presented.

3. A.Professionalism – the Key to SuccessSTAFF & MANAGEMENT

In this training the student will understand and be able to implement the five keys to success. The student will understand the importance of character, attitude, excellence, competency and conduct in the workplace. This session will enable the attendee to put these keys to work and see herself become a valuable asset to any company.

3. B.Ways of Listening to Children’s PerspectivesSTAFF & MANAGEMENT

Early childhood professionals play important roles in socializing young children and transmitting cultural values through their learning environment. A wide range of documentation such as videos, tape recorders, photographs, drawings, guided walks, map making, role playing, and other activities can be produced and created by the children giving them a voice and making learning and thinking visible. These documents of lived experiences provide teachers a glimpse into the process off children’s learning strategies.

4. A.Hiring the Right Staff for the Job and Keeping Them!MANAGEMENT

Staff turnover is an issue most directors deal with and stress themselves over. This session will help directors solve the nightmare. First, participants will learn skills and techniques to use in the interview and selection process. Second, the focus will be on training quality teachers new and old. And last, RETENTION!

4. B.¢enters on a ¢ent.STAFF & MANAGEMENT

Connie Richey

Do you have champagne taste but your budget has a beer pocketbook? In this training Connie Richey, with 30+ years experience and owner of two different early childhood facilities, will give teachers an understanding of the important role that centers play in early childhood programs. Participants will explore how to define and make centers for cents on the dollar – using math, the alphabet, felt boards, puppet stages, reading and writing. You will take home an abundance of ideas to make your centers a treasure chest of exciting ways for your children to learn and to play.

4. C.It’s Raining. It’s Pouring. . . . Now What?STAFF

Debbie Taylor

This is a “hands on” demonstration of songs, dances, activities and ideas for engaging children in active participation when they can’t go outside. The participants will receive valuable information on various dances and activities through “active reconstruction of each activity.” Attendees should come prepared to dance and sing. A CD with a collection of various activities, songs & music will be available for a nominal fee at the end of the session.

MEET OUR AMAZING SPEAKERS

Connie Richey, with over 30 years in the industry working as a director with national companies, opened a center with her husband in Lavon, Texas, and has never looked back. Connie has a wealth of information on running a child care center, and she will share it with you in a lively and entertaining session.

Laura Daniels-Simmonds holds a Ph.D. in child development from Texas Woman’s University, a masters degree from University of North Texas and an undergraduate degree in early childhood education from TexasChristianUniversity. She is a passionate advocate for teachers and caregivers who dedicate their daily lives working with children, and she strives to help them realize the power they have to change young lives forever. She is currently the online faculty coordinator for the Early Childhood Professions Department at CentralTexasCollege and runs her own consultant business training thousands of caregivers throughout the state and nation each year. She is a single parent of two teenagers, Holden who attends the U.S. Air Force Academy and Cassidy, a high school senior who plans to attend the U.S. Naval Academy.

Brenda Schultz received her bachelors of science degree from University of Houston, ClearLake in elementary education. She has been training child care teachers for the last 19 years, serving as center director in the corporate environment while taking three schools through 5 different NAEYC accreditations. Currently she is vice president of Bluebonnet Schools, Inc., in the Austin area.

Tym Smith has been in the early care and education profession for over 20 years. His career started as an after-school teacher working with children five to twelve. After completing studies in early child development at EastTexasBaptistUniversity, Tym taught pre-kindergarten and kindergarten. He moved on to serve as the director of a center with over 250 children and then on to multi-unit management operating programs across the Dallas/Fort Worth area. In 2006 he started Early Care and Education Training and Consulting. He is a member of TLCCA, NAEYC, and NAA, and served as an NAEYC validator for several years. He is currently president-elect of TLCCA.

Debbie Taylor received her bachelor of science from StephenF.AustinUniversity in elementary education. After teaching first grade in the public schools for five years, Debbie and her husband opened the Candy Cane Corner centers in Corsicana, Ennis, Palestine and Waco. She was director of the Corsicana center for twenty-five years before recently handing over the directorship to her daughter Jill. Debbie now is focusing on training others in the child care field on a myriad of topics which her many years of experience have taught her.

Laura Varnell has been in the field of early care and education for the last 15 years and was director at The Sunshine House in Frisco for the last 9 years. She has taught toddlers, twos and pre-kindergarten and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas, with a masters degree in adult education and training from the University of Phoenix. Laura is a professional mater registered Training with the Texas ECECDS system, as well as a registered trainer through Texas Workforce Solutions, CampFire and Child Care Group.
