Procedure No. ERT 048 Rev. No. 2

1.0Hydrant Operation / __1.1Close all hydrant outlets, then open hydrant main valve completely.
__1.2Control water flow at 2½” hose outlet valves or monitor nozzle.
__1.3Consider hazard created by water at high (over 90 psi) pressure and in large volume from the monitor and hose lines.
__1.4Keep one outlet open while closing main hydrant valve in order to sweep debris from seat. Leave hose valve cracked open after hydrant is closed to allow hydrant to drain. Keep monitor pointed upward to allow drainage.
__1.5Do not leave hydrant pressurized during freezing weather.
__1.6Report any hydrant defects to Safety Team.
__1.7Since fire hydrants may be hard to operate, care should be taken to avoid strain to back or abdomen when pulling on hydrant wrench. Also keep one leg extended behind to keep from falling if valve handle moves quickly or breaks.
__1.8Be aware that closing hydrant too tightly will draw main valve up into hydrant body and damage the main valve and make hydrant inoperable.
2.0Winterization / __2.1To prevent hydrants from freezing, hydrant valve should be closed. Leave one outlet valve open (1/4” off the seat) with cap off. Close all other hydrant outlet valves and place caps on them. Grease threads on caps and fittings, making sure that exposed threads on open outlet valves are well greased to protect the threads.
__2.2To prevent monitor nozzles from freezing, nozzles should be tilted down and open. The monitor swivels should be checked and greased for winter use.
__2.3When using fire pump at the fire water pit, the heat tracing on the pressure controller should be check to make sure it is operating.
