Position Title: Creative Services Specialist - Convention and Visitor’s Bureau

Salary Range: $21.2924 Per Hour

Actively supports and upholds the City’s stated mission and values. According to the Decision Band Method classification system, employees of this classification are responsible for operational level decision making (decisions on carrying out the operations of the selected process). Duties require a moderate degree of frequency, complexity, and diversity compared to other positions in the same band.

Under direct supervision of the Creative Services Manager, employees of this classification serve as the in-house advertising agency for the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and the City of Flagstaff, branding Flagstaff as a premier travel destination, creating messages, collateral, and other materials.

ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:

  • Supervisory: This job does not have supervisory responsibilities.
  • Budgetary: This job does not have budgetary responsibilities, but carries out day-to-day activities within approved budget.
  • Strategic Planning: This job has partial responsibility for strategic planning at the program level including providing input on overall marketing and branding plans for the CVB.
  • Policies/Procedures: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Compliance: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Federal, State, and Local laws, rules, and regulations as well as City policies and procedures.
  • Council Communications: This job carries out day-to-day activities in accordance with Council’s adopted priorities and direction.
  • Reporting: This job does not have duties related to reporting to Federal/State/Local agencies.

EXAMPLES OF THE WORK PERFORMED (ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY):

  • Provides excellent, proactive customer service to both internal and external customers, to include providing design, production and related consultation services to the CVB, within own division and other COF divisions.
  • Advises and assists the Creative Services Manager and staff in developing advertising strategies and communications materials to support CVB’s overall marketing mission.
  • Builds and maintains relationships within the community to gain commitment from hotels, restaurants, retail, local organizations, Northern Arizona University and attractions toward our common goal of increasing visitation to Flagstaff.
  • Develops and implements long-range programs, as well as the day-to-day performance of duties that lead toward establishing and maintaining positive and productive community relations and outreach efforts between the CVB and citizens, the business community, media, event organizers, local attractions, outside agencies and public officials.
  • Assists with the conceptualization of creative marketing and branding strategies to position Flagstaff as a premier tourism destination.
  • Produces logos for CVB events and promotional campaigns, develops and maintains CVB branding supporting the image and messaging for Flagstaff as a visitor destination, and ensures branding integrity through the supervision of outside vendors.
  • Develops and edits copy for advertising and communications.
  • Designs and produces print and online creative, collateral and publications.
  • Assists with the production process, copy approvals, proofreading, printing approvals and attends press checks when necessary.
  • Participates in making recommendations on the CVB website process and structure.
  • Collaborates with the Sales, Marketing, Public Relations and Visitor Services programs to develop presentations, collateral material and other items necessary to the work program of each section.
  • Contributes to the procurement of all photo imagery and illustration necessary for CVB-produced advertising, collateral and publications.
  • Participates in the maintenance of the CVB digital photo and video libraries and fulfills photo and logo requests from stakeholders, media, and staff.
  • Participates in maintaining positive, proactive relationships with various members of the media community by promptly fulfilling image and information requests.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Associate’s Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, or a related field.
  • 2 years of progressively advancing creative responsibilities with an ad agency, design firm, publishing house, and/or in-house marketing environment.
  • Four years of computer experience in both Mac and PC platforms with software applications devoted to design and computer imaging (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator), publishing and commercial printing processes, photography, and website design and/or development (Wordpress and Flash). Experience could include college course work.
  • Or any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the above minimum requirements.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications or related field.
  • Knowledge and experience with photography and photographic principles.
  • Knowledge and experience with video and video editing.
  • Experience with digital illustration.
  • Experience with 3D rendering.
  • Strong knowledge of design principles and art composition, e.g. page layout, color theory, typography, imagery and integration of components into a harmonious whole.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess, or obtain upon employment, a valid Arizona driver’s license.
  • Ability to operate in a work environment requiring irregular work hours as dictated by meetings, activities, events, shows, travel and familiarization tours, which will include weekends, evenings and holidays.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high paced environment and meet deadlines.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity.

Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Knowledge of English language composition, usage, vocabulary, and nuance.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to interpret research and statistical reports to create design materials which visually represent research findings.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Time Management Skills: Ability to manage a project from start to finish while meeting deadlines.
  • Layout Skills: Ability to design visually engaging online and print creative.
  • Software Skills: Ability to utilize necessary software to create print, online, video and animation creative.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger/handle/feel, and the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Working conditions include occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
