Job Description

JOB SUMMARY: In collaboration with the Executive Director (ED), the Director of Development and Marketing (DDM) creates, produces and monitors development goals and practices. He/she is responsible for donor and community relations activities including (but not limited to) public relations (website, periodicals and social media networking), communications, public relations, fundraising campaigns, grant writing, internal/external event coordination, corporate and foundation relations, volunteer recruitment, gift processing, and database management. The Director of Development and Marketing is responsible for developing andimplementing fundraising and communication strategies. Working collaboratively with the ED and the executive team, the DDM provides strategic direction on constituent relationship management, cultivation of institutional giving, and the broader communications strategy. The long term fundraising and communications strategies plan to guide growth in development and brand management activities. A central focus of the DDM is to secure the financial support of foundations, corporations, and individual donors. The ideal person will be a dynamic entrepreneurial individual who enjoys front-line relationship building, soliciting, and developing long range strategies to expand Harm Reduction Coalition’s visibility and funding base.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Fundraising

• Design, implement, and monitor a multi-year fund development program that aims to diversify revenue by identifying new funding sources in addition to existing funders.

• Guide and manage the individual donor solicitation process, including major gifts and planned giving.

• Cultivate relationships with individuals who serve as organizational ambassadors/spokespeople.

• Use customer relationship management (CRM) platforms to plan, implement, and evaluate thefund development program.

• Meet with and facilitate introductions and coordinate meetings between appropriate HRC staffand prospective individual/institutional donors.

• Prepare and submit high quality grant proposals and reports with year to year follow-up and communication.

• Prepare effective written and online fundraising appeals and campaigns that result in sustained and upgraded giving.

• Plan and execute multiple donor cultivation events per year that scale our donors to exceed past gifts.

Increase knowledge of and outreach to build a planning giving program called the Issan Dorsey Legacy Society.

• Create, implement, and monitor development policies and protocols, such as a gift acceptance policy and donor recognition levels such as the annual donor wall.

• Prepare and review monthly fundraising dashboard with executive team

Participate in meetings and maintain awareness of development goals and projects, and promote involvement of the Board, Executive Director,Development Committee, Staff, and Volunteers in meeting those goals.

Manage production of Maitri’s annual gala, BLISS with contracted event producer and volunteers.

Represent Maitri at external fundraising and community events.

Supervise outside resources in relation to fundraising events, including but not limited to, printers, graphic designers, consultants, volunteers, food services, venue representatives; collaborate with other non-profit organizations when appropriate.

Solicits in-kind goods and professional services to match the needs of particular projects or programs (in-house and as 3rd party beneficiary), including but not limited to graphic design, massage therapists, food and beverage services, kitchen equipment, cultural and/or event tickets for residents, volunteers and staff, entertainers, photographers, computer equipment, office equipment.

Participate in and provide support for third-party fundraising activities where Maitri is a beneficiary (e.g. Folsom Street Events, Academy of Friends, Grass Roots Gay Rights West).

In collaboration with the Executive Director, edits and coordinates production of direct mail campaigns, e-mail campaigns, annual report, newsletters, and collateral materials in a manner that reinforces Maitri’s philosophy and image as well as donors’ relationshipswith Maitri.

MARKETING

• Develop, implement, and monitor the agency’s marketing strategies.

• Provide strategic direction on development of media projects to drive fundraising and visibility.

• Provide strategic direction on social media, web presence, email marketing, and social marketing campaigns that increase visibility and awareness, promote constituent engagement, and advance strategic priorities.

• Ensure publication/resources such as website, Instagram, facebook and linkedin are aligned with established branding and style guidelines.

• Coordinate paid and donated media placements.

• Prepare and review monthly communications dashboard with ED.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP

• In collaboration with the management team, cultivate creative, collaborative relationships with non-traditional community partners.

Prepare a fiscal year development plan.

• Supervise the marketing & development volunteer support staff, and department consultants such as graphic designer, website consultant and mailhouse.

• Participate in directors’ team meeting.

• Coordinate and lead the development committee.

• Prepare and manage annual marketing and development budget.
