RCSD SUMMER READING INCENTIVE ACTIVITIES

Select one activity for your grade level section and complete it after you read a book from the Summer Reading List. Complete the Summer Reading Form provided and attach it to your completed activity. Return to your English Teacher in the September.

GRADE / ACTIVITIES (Select one activity per book)
Pre-K-2 /
  • Complete a journal entry chart using the journal chart form provided (you may get help from a parent or older sibling).
  • Draw a picture that shows a scene in the book and write two to four sentences that tell about the scene or characters in the scene.
  • Write a new story ending for your book (1-3 sentences)
  • Write a summary of a few sentences that tells about the book.

3-6 /
  • Complete a journal entry chart using the form provided.
  • Write a new story ending for your book (at least one paragraph of 5 or six sentences)
  • Write a book review that tells about your book. Include a final statement telling whether or not you recommend this book to other readers and why.

7-9 /
  • Complete a journal entry chart using the form provided.
  • Write a letter to a character in the book. Tell him or her what you wish you could if you had the chance to meet.
  • Create a chart (T-chart or Venn diagram or other graphic organizer) and compare two characters in the book. Show how they are alike and/or different from each other.
  • Write a new story ending for your book (at least one page).
  • Write a book review that tells about your book. Include a final paragraph that shares your thoughts about the book and if you would recommend the book to other readers your age. Be sure to explain why you recommend or do not recommend this book.

10-12 /
  • Complete a journal entry chart using form provided.
  • Select a character in the book. Analyze his or her actions or thoughts. Present your analysis in a well thought-out essay.
  • Select a quote or short section of text from the book. Copy that piece of text and explain why you chose it. Tell what importance this quote or piece of text should have to readers.
  • Write a book review of your book. Include a description of the setting and main characters, summarize the plot, and include your opinion of this book in terms of its value as a literary work.
